Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

Don't make hats large enough for Whorealdo...

During Katrina he reportedly had a 'rock star' air conditoned bus to sleep in.

Done. The Forecast/Advisory and Discussion should be the last before landfall, though we should have one or two intermediate discussions before landfall.

Steve from NWS in LA - Landfall expected between 11:30pm and 12AM for Cameron and Jefferson. If eyewall threatens more inland they will issue more warnings. No warning for Orange Co. TX at this time. Expecting issued warning for Cocaseux(sp? - my apologies for butchering!). Expecting tornado type damage over a wide area. Cameron Parish is the one that is very low lying and has had major loss of life from I believe Hurricane Audra in the early 1960s, but not really sure of the name.

Land is about 1-5 feet above sea level for all of the Southern part of the Parish.

But most of it is uninhabited marshland as I remember it.

The parish north of there (which I cannot spell much better) is where the towns of Lake Charles, Sulphur, Vinton, and Westlake are.

Vinton has a racetrack for the Texans. Sulphur is a little further East, and then you have Westlake and then Lake Charles.

We might be hearing more of those names, as well as the name of Orange, Texas in the news, as well as Port Arthur...

Not a prob. I hope you do too. It looks like the eyewall should JUST miss Houston, though you guys will still get hurricane-force winds.
