Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

What makes me grind my teeth is the inanity of these media types. Have they never been in commute traffic? They aren't able to grasp the sheer magnitude of the numbers of people flowing onto roads designated for moving cars and trucks in far fewer numbers. Daily commute traffic does not include moving hospital patients, prisoners, nursing home people and people who do not ordinarily use those very roads. Do you see these carping media types offering any brilliant affordable solutions? Nope, they just complain, moan and screech.

Me too....it's just crazy. I think the fact they have moved so many people out is just incredible. I get weary of the snide remarks about "problems with evacuation", etc. Utter hogwash... Courage.

Steveegg or someone who actually understands weather better than me can explain it better, but I think the wind will shift on the backside (to from the south), which will push water north.

The local Lake Charles TV guys were talking about many people on Crewboats in the channel. I find that hard to believe. When I worked offshore in the Gulf, the SOP was to get as far away as possible from a hurricane, and if you had to ride one out, go to open shallow water.

If you do get the eye itself, then the backside is worse because it goes from calm/almost calm to total bedlam. If you're just getting the eyewall, the right-side is worse because the motion of the hurricane gets added to the wind (and if you're on the coast, you get the worst of the surge).

Can't believe my ears. Tucker Carlson just said he's amazed -- they are sooooo organized in Texas; especially compared to what they saw in Louisiana.

1:10 AM - The 1 AM position estimate out of NHC put the center about 30 miles southeast of Sabine Pass. Also, we just measured a gust to 71 knots here at the office, which we still believe was on the low side of accurate.

Backside is usually weaker because eye starts to breakup when front hits. This storm lost it's backside an hour ago.

The way Shuster says Hardball (with the emphasis on the 2nd syllable) at the end of every report he spews on Matthews' yak show, I get the distinct impression he's flirting with Chrissy.
