Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

There are some guys out in their shrimp boats per Geraldo many hours ago. They were going to stay with the boats and a surge was expected when the cane came in.

#1407 is why I wanted to discount that first AF306 fix. If I had plugged those numbers into the 2nd AF306 fix, the speed would be even more ridiculous than it was.

What makes me grind my teeth is the inanity of these media types. Have they never been in commute traffic? They aren't able to grasp the sheer magnitude of the numbers of people flowing onto roads designated for moving cars and trucks in far fewer numbers.

Daily commute traffic does not include moving hospital patients, prisoners, nursing home people and people who do not ordinarily use those very roads.

Do you see these carping media types offering any brilliant affordable solutions? Nope, they just complain, moan and screech.

This blond anchor "Jamie" is really a rocket scientist. It's 1:00 AM in the middle of a hurricane and she's asking Rick Leventhal if people are still trying to leave town.

TM, I wouldn't call them selfish. Everyone was concerned about their personal and their family's safety. When I went to bed on Wednesday night, the forecast track looked like it was going to go directly over my house with 125 mph winds.

Needless to say, I didn't sleep that night, but spent all of my time getting my household ready to GTHOD. I was not in the mandatory evac. zone, but was ready to leave b/c my childrens' lives were on the line.

We never made it out of town b/c by that time (4 am on Thursday morning) it was too late. I can't fault people for trying to control their destiny.

With everyone trying to one-up each other for 2006 it's going to get nasty. The President hasn't given them anything to hoist him on (like Clinton) and they are desperate. Desperation is a terrible thing to watch.

Yep.

There's a photo of some tornado damage to a motel near here from Katrina. The second floor is gone except for a few bathrooms that were left standing. I'll post the pic if I can find it.

Been watching CNN for last several hours.

A. Cooper asked the CNN weather man two hours ago when the bad winds would get to him. Weatherman said 20 minutes.

Cooper just asked him again and he said 4 hours.

Same so called "Weather Expert" explained that wind forces go up as the cube, and therefore 100mph was 25 times as bad as 50mph.

CNN needs a new weather expert.
