LOS ANGELES - Two supervisors urged voters Tuesday to sign petitions for a ballot measure to keep a cross on the Los Angeles County seal.
Supervisors Michael Antonovich and Don Knabe were joined by veterans and religious groups that support the design of the seal used since 1957.
The Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 last year to remove the cross, with Antonovich and Knabe opposing the move.
The decision came after the American Civil Liberties Union threatened to file a lawsuit claiming the cross was a government endorsement of Christianity.
Antonovich said the ACLU threat "is something right out of George Orwell's '1984.'"
Signatures from more than 170,000 registered voters are needed by Sept. 26 to qualify the measure for the June 2006 ballot. Organizers of the Save the Seal campaign said they have collected 75,000 signatures.
The ACLU first demanded removal of the Latin cross in May 2004. The cross was one of several symbols surrounding the seal's main figure, Pomona, a Roman goddess.
Supervisors have approved a new seal that would remove the cross and include an image of the San Gabriel Mission and an American Indian woman.

LA needs to tell the ACLU to take a flying leap!!
Antonovich said the ACLU threat "is something right out of George Orwell's '1984.'"
The ACLU is the enemy from within, doing all it can to destroy this Country!
10. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.
21. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with "social" religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity which does not need a "religious crutch."
22. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of "separation of church and state."
How has the ACLU gotten away with this?
Oh, yeah, activist judges!
They count on the ignorant...
...and the apathetic.
No shortage of either it seems.
Why has Jay777 been suspended? His posted petition is activism.
Bump.
Put in my .02! And signed the petition!!
hey, i'm on Jay's ping list! What did he do?
"hey, i'm on Jay's ping list! What did he do?"
I'm not sure...Jay called and said he was suspended until the 30th. For posting in Activism and being a 'slow learner', what ever that means.
