MAJOR CONGESTION, THOUSANDS PARKED BY INTERSTATE DUE TO LACK OF GAS NEAR COLUMBUS, TEXAS

KLBJ radio reporting up to 5,000 cars parked along I-10 in Colorado County (near Columbus, TX) due to lack of gasoline or breakdowns. Also reporting trashcans at all quick stops/gasoline stations are overflowing. The exit ramps from I-10 into Columbus are closed and people are NOT allowed into the city from I-10.

The measurement of an evacuation plan is not how many people run out of gas 20-30 miles from the danger zone. It is not how many trash cans are overflowing. It is not who gets impatient and angry in their car.

It is how many die from direct storm causes and who tried to get out.

So far, superb results. Of course, the storm is still inbound.

Well Columbus is about 90 miles West of Houston, at least these people got out of the way. Gas stations, grocery stores and all of the stores running out of supplies can't plan for this type of panic, they can't afford to keep extra stocks of supplies just sitting around for years on end or for the next "big emergency".

This has all been cause by the media and their quest for the "big story" and worst case scenarios. Yesterday I heard some reporter on Fox say that "in Galveston storm surges could be between 25 and 50 feet." 50 feet!?! That would be a freaking tidal wave. Galveston normally has waves that are about 2 to 3 feet.

Uh...maybe I'm completely stupid but why don't they evacuate the low lying areas first. They should have grid coming back from the water and evacuate one area at a time instead of everybody trying to get out at once. I can see why people just say to hell with it and stay.

I'd be looking at another route. FM529 to Bellville, TX159 to LaGrange, TX71 to Bastrop, TX21 to San Marcos, then keep going to the Hill Country.

Can you imagine trying to evacuate Los Angeles?

Wifey and I were discussing that very point last night...not doable, especially given the fact that coastal areas are generally the most densely populated and traffic is jammed there on a regular basis anyhow.

Well the good news is that Earthquakes come without warning, so it's a moot point. Kind of hard to evacuate for something that you have no idea when it will hit.

100% agree, I am from Houston, I have lived in Dallas, I'm now in Austin and I know at least 3 alternate routes out of Houston, Dallas, and Austin.

This is the Only real failure of our society at this point. We entered a war and the government told us to sit back and be happy "The Government will take care of you.".

I was never told that the government would take care of me. The same goes for employment, I never asked the President for a job. I don't know why some people think that way?
