Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 22 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/22/2005 5:44:09 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Category Four Hurricane Rita continues to move toward landfall along the northwest Gulf of Mexico shoreline. Mandatory and voluntary evacuations continue across Texas and Louisiana coastal areas. Lake Charles LA is providing evacuations by bus for residents who have no transportation.

Traffic gridlock in the greater Houston area was compounded by gasoline stations without fuel, long lines at those stations still carrying fuel, and record breaking temperatures on the first day of autumn.

Offshore drilling platforms and rigs, as well as oil refineries, petrochemical and natural gas plants are in the path of the storm. Wave heights recorded by buoy have exceeded 38 feet. The refineries threatened by Hurricane Rita are on higher ground than those affected by flooding from Katrina. As a result, speculation abounds regarding future prices for winter heating fuel and gasoline.

It's good they start with the front of the line.

But yep, looks like it wasn't all an elaborate hoax. Wonder when we start getting wet.

My son finally got out of Houston. It took him 24 hours to drive the usual 3 (from his apartment) to San Antonio. Going was much better once he got to where I-10 was in contro-flow. He almost ran out of gas, didn't stop to pee, and was getting faint from no food or water, but he made it about 8pm last night. Got a full tank of gas and a good meal. Thank God.

It took my husband 26 hours to get his aunt from Galveston up to Dallas ~ they finally rolled in here about 3:30 yesterday afternoon.

He's been asleep now for 13 hours and I plan to let him sleep for 12 more if needs to!

I'm hoping for some early rain to water the plants on my patio before I bring them in.

To make a bad situation even worse there is now a bus on fire on I-45 south of Dallas and the backup is now more than 13 miles coming into the city

On good authority most stations toped off their tanks on wed. limited sales so when they reopen will double the price. And all those Phi Beta Kappa's that run the stations bugged out.

The book I've been reading, Isaac's Storm, does a DARNED good job of conveying that exquisitely -- being a part of the hurricane. I've only yet experienced a rain deluge from Hurr. Charlie.

This looks bad! It looks like the bus may have exploded in fire with evacuees on board .....

Yes, you are missing something. Even people leaving with a full tank were runnning out of gas after spending 20+ hours in traffic.
