Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 22 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/22/2005 5:44:09 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Category Four Hurricane Rita continues to move toward landfall along the northwest Gulf of Mexico shoreline. Mandatory and voluntary evacuations continue across Texas and Louisiana coastal areas. Lake Charles LA is providing evacuations by bus for residents who have no transportation.

Traffic gridlock in the greater Houston area was compounded by gasoline stations without fuel, long lines at those stations still carrying fuel, and record breaking temperatures on the first day of autumn.

Offshore drilling platforms and rigs, as well as oil refineries, petrochemical and natural gas plants are in the path of the storm. Wave heights recorded by buoy have exceeded 38 feet. The refineries threatened by Hurricane Rita are on higher ground than those affected by flooding from Katrina. As a result, speculation abounds regarding future prices for winter heating fuel and gasoline.

Well, he actually said "The increased intensity of these kinds of extreme storms is very likely to be due to global warming", which is more reasonable but I still don't agree with him nor do many (most?) meteorologists

"George Bush doesn't care about Mexican people."

"Oh sure, he kept the border wide open, but when the storm came, no one sent air conditioned buses with bathrooms to take us to cruise ships."

You just can't win these days if you're a conservative President.

"The increased intensity of these kinds of extreme storms is very likely to be due to global warming"

Somebody should inform him there was an increased intensity of these kinds of extreme storms during the 1860's, and again during the 1870's and the 1940's. But why deal with reality and historical facts when you're a kook and a liar with an agenda?

Do you remember that big snow we had...maybe, what, a couple of years ago? I drove through 4 1/2 feet of it

Yes, I did have a place on Teller #1. I also had Trout Haven on Twin Rock Road for a couple years.

That snow storm brings back some memories. I had invited my girlfriend and her daughter up to go fishing as the weather had been kind of nice. It started snowing hard so we decided to go to the back of the property and go sledding and have a cookout on a bonfire instead of fishing. It was coming down so hard that the campfire was three or four feet down in the snow and smores would freeze before you could eat them. We had no idea that people were dieing all over the place in that storm, we were just playing in the snow. I would say that you were lucky to get off Pikes Peak before spring thaw.

You're right, I would love to get up there sometime this fall. For personal reasons, it would just be a good time for a visit.

Life is short. Go for it if you can. Aspens should be turning real nice in about three weeks. If you can make it then, take a side trip up Gold Camp Road. The Views are amazing that time of year. Bring your coat.

Rock salt loaded in a 12 gauge is a favorite for that sort of thing. :)

The DA shouldn't have a problem with that ;-)

But I will bail out of my house and go to a more secure location if/when things get really bad.

Be safe down there. Maybe bail before it gets really bad. Nothing wrong with that.

Losing a mustang is not the ultimate tragedy in life, is it?

Torie is right. Thank goodness it's not an AC Cobra -- that would be tragic! Hopefully they made it far enough that it will be safe.

You cannot argue with the fact that average ocean temperatures have been warming. Whether the causation is natural or man made, is still up for debate. One side of course believes that apes are omni potent. Guess which side ? Now that we know mars is also warming and we know the suns output has been increasing, the most likely culprit is that big hot ball in the sky that is so bright you cannot even look at.

"It was coming down so hard that the campfire was three or four feet down in the snow and smores would freeze before you could eat them."

Cookouts on the Range during snows must seem sardonic to people who haven't done it. LOL! ...beats cooking out between fire bans and vigilance for bear in the summer, though.

We weren't above the tree line. The driving (up to about 9200 ft. in CCME, where snow was about a foot deeper than the bottom of the same development) was easy enough with our work truck's lifted suspension, oversized offroad tires, lockers and chains on all fours. It's also good for getting closer to peaks for backcountry snowboarding. We keep a smaller 4WD for good gas mileage with smaller loads and nicer weather.

Life up here is really good for all who wear good boots (loose, rated -65F or lower, and available in Castlerock for cheap), water resistant clothes and keep a couple of cases of those handwarmers and footwarmers (small packets of sawdust, iron filings and whatever else is in them) on board. ;-)
