Update: Category 5 Hurricane Rita - Live Thread, Part II
NHC - NOAA ^ | 21 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/21/2005 1:36:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Category 3 Hurricane Rita became the fifth major hurricane of the 2005 season during the night. Hurricane Rita threaded the needle through the Florida Straits and moved into the Gulf of Mexico. Storm damage in the Florida Keys and South Florida Peninsula was light, with scattered power outages, scattered tornados, and mild to moderate flooding.

Mandatory evacuations are in effect for Galveston County TX and New Orleans. Additional evacuation orders in the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area are anticipated throughout the day.

Crude oil prices reacted as oil producers shut down and evacuated workers from platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

TXCN is reporting that Galveston buses are now shuttling people out of the area from a local community center (need to call first to make a reservation and to give your requirements).

You *can* take your pets with you on these buses, so long as they are crated.

Isn't it nice to live in a state with a plan and the means and willingness to execute it?

Sorry. Not "officially" a 5.

And it likely won't be for a few hours. While the max flight-level wind just reported is 137 knots (157 mph), that's flight-level. It appears that while the NHC was a bit off in their pressure estimate in the last advisory, they were pretty close on the wind.

And you would want to waste drinking water because....

I never said to waste drinking water. Potable water is not the only type of water you will have after a hurricane hits.

How old are they? Victoria will probably suffer extensive tree damage and some structural damage at the least. They may be looking at weeks without power. Can your parents cope with that?

Physically, they can cope fine. But my mother emotionally, well...

I wouldn't use "better". The pressure splits the difference between the 11 am advisory (944 mb) and the Dvorak sat estimate of 920.

This storm has been doing that to them all along. The estimates from sat data have looked stronger than the readings via airplane...interesting...

Are you saying "Pee in the tank, not in the bowl?"

No. I am saying to get a bucket and scoop up some dirty water somewhere. Use the toilet as necessary and then fill the tank and flush.

Thanks. Does anyone have a link to a side by side comparison of Rita to Katrina at about this stage (this distance from landfall)?

What happens if pipes burst

Probably won't happen. If it does, cut off the water at the meter.

and toilets overflow?

You will have a mess to clean up. Any carpet can actually be cleaned and disinfected; you might want to replace the padding. You will need a mop and a shop vac. Be sure to mop the slab with some Clorox while you have the carpet up. After you clean the carpet, you might want to leave it out in the sun for a couple of days.

Well KLVI out of Beaumont did have coaches that were really excited about a couple of blue chippers they found among the evacuees. There's nothing wrong with looking for the silver lining in the clouds.

The only problem is that while Rita is developing slightly slower than the satellites suggest, it's only been by a matter of hours.
