Update: Category 5 Hurricane Rita - Live Thread, Part II
NHC - NOAA ^ | 21 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/21/2005 1:36:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Category 3 Hurricane Rita became the fifth major hurricane of the 2005 season during the night. Hurricane Rita threaded the needle through the Florida Straits and moved into the Gulf of Mexico. Storm damage in the Florida Keys and South Florida Peninsula was light, with scattered power outages, scattered tornados, and mild to moderate flooding.

Mandatory evacuations are in effect for Galveston County TX and New Orleans. Additional evacuation orders in the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area are anticipated throughout the day.

Crude oil prices reacted as oil producers shut down and evacuated workers from platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

The exact center of the 1900 storm seems to have passed between Red Fish Cove and Terramar Beach.

How far south was/is that? I can't find either on my TX map.

Last I heard, Galveston was 15' at its highest point, so a 16' surge would not be good.

15-17 feet over sea wall in Galveston. Shep had the reporter repeat it. This coincides with the poster who mentioned over 30 feet high waves.

Anyone in Galveston is out of their mind to stay.

This scenario is what Cantore was really, really upset about last night- at the time he was speaking theoretically..he said if it keeps west...then takes a sharp turn north...Galveston is history and Houston is in BAD shape (that's when he mentioned 600,000 houses)

Oh, they're just SW of Galveston; I pulled up a graphic of the 1900 track, and then went to Mapquest.

They're microscopic little villages. You can see them on Mapquest.

"I really think events that are bringing out of towners in for the weekend should be canceled to free up those hotels. "

Actually we were able to convince some to cancel. There were others calling who said "how come there's no availability in Texas?" I wanted to say DUH, where have you? Wake up and smell the coffee.
