Update: Category 5 Hurricane Rita - Live Thread, Part II
NHC - NOAA ^ | 21 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/21/2005 1:36:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Category 3 Hurricane Rita became the fifth major hurricane of the 2005 season during the night. Hurricane Rita threaded the needle through the Florida Straits and moved into the Gulf of Mexico. Storm damage in the Florida Keys and South Florida Peninsula was light, with scattered power outages, scattered tornados, and mild to moderate flooding.

Mandatory evacuations are in effect for Galveston County TX and New Orleans. Additional evacuation orders in the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area are anticipated throughout the day.

Crude oil prices reacted as oil producers shut down and evacuated workers from platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

Now where did that last number come from (I trust the 70-mile eyewall)?

"Station 42003 has failed. It will be restored to service when it can be worked into the schedule."

I think some were never fixed from Katrina.
Maybe this was this one?

There is a press conference on KHOU. The buses will stay with the people who were on them. They will not be returning.

DFW may get more rain than even we want: "POST-RITA WX A BIT OF A TOSS-UP. GFS CALLING FOR THE REMNANTS OF RITA TO STALL OVER NTX FOR ABOUT 24-30 HRS BEFORE SLOWLY PULLING OFF TO THE NORTH. CAN'T REALLY ARGUE TOO MUCH WITH THIS AS ECWMF ALSO HINTING AT A SIMILAR SCENARIO.."

Anyone know what might happen to it after the 5-day track, or have links to computer models that go past 5 days?

Stay in Rio Rancho. Lots of new hotels, plenty of shopping, and you can visit Santa Fe without having to stay there (45 minute drive). Take a tour of the Intel plant.

I doubt it. I already had one lib friend say it was Texas...so he didnt care what happened.

Your friend can say this after Texas opened its doors and its hearts to all those NOLA evacuees? If I had a friend like that, he'd be my friend no longer. In fact, I'd be sorely tempted to give him the thrashing of his life.

NHC FINALLY posted that update. Maybe the CDT timestamp fooled them (the Zulu time suggests that it should have been 545 pm EDT or 445 pm CDT).

Deja vu, huh? We were here thinking these things before Katrina hit, but you weren't in the path then. I know I was amazed at how quickly Katrina strengthened, until today.

We'll be praying for you and yours. There's still time for it to weaken.
