Update: Category 5 Hurricane Rita - Live Thread, Part II
NHC - NOAA ^ | 21 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/21/2005 1:36:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Category 3 Hurricane Rita became the fifth major hurricane of the 2005 season during the night. Hurricane Rita threaded the needle through the Florida Straits and moved into the Gulf of Mexico. Storm damage in the Florida Keys and South Florida Peninsula was light, with scattered power outages, scattered tornados, and mild to moderate flooding.

Mandatory evacuations are in effect for Galveston County TX and New Orleans. Additional evacuation orders in the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area are anticipated throughout the day.

Crude oil prices reacted as oil producers shut down and evacuated workers from platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

Nice of them to be so concerned about Texas after Houston welcomed so many of the N.O. evacuees in to their city.

I'm sure they're saying in DUmmyland that Texas is getting punished for "exploiting" the evacuees, as the NYT put it.

I wondered why they did not use CB radios. I wonder if the people down there were thinking at all.

I'm serious, I live in NM about 12 hrs from Dallas and if there are any Freepers who need a place to stay I have a nice travel trailer, an extra bedroom and a large living room and den. I have acres and acres of land if you have your own RV or trailer. I only have hook-ups for 2 but if there were more we could come up with something.

Go as far inland as you can. Katrina did substantial damage to Mississippi more than 60 miles inland.

This thing is now a Cat 5. Tropical storm winds of 60 MPH were felt 300 miles inland from Katrina.

What makes Dungan think Rita will be different?

I prefer to err on the high side. There aren't any hotel rooms available anyway.

Should the headline be changed to read 5?

I partly blame Shep and Geraldo for all of the hysteria that has caused a distortion (IMHO) about Katrina...

There were lots of people doing good work...before, during and after Katrina that were never acknowledged because all most Americans (non-internet users and news junkies) saw, were Shep and Geraldo standing on that freeway...

SCREAMING about why isn't BUSH doing something for these people...which put all of the blame on Bush and none on Nagin and Blanco....

NOW, even though we know that Nagin and Blanco were idiots...everyone will just remember BUSH being blamed by the idiot media and Landrieu.

"Extremely Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Rita with maximum sustained winds 165 mph."

Now we're doomed. This time we're definitely doomed.

You know, I am just waiting until blizzards hit this winter (and I know they will, because the fuzzy caterpillars are totally black). Somehow we will get by because we PREPARE.

These reporters need a good wake up slap across their faces. We, in the midwest, have survived horrible tornados & horrible blizzards without looting, rapes & murder! Maybe they should consider the source, rather than say Bush wasn't prepared!!! I'm sick of it!

It is not just you; you'd think they were all going for the Pulitzer or something.

And I am waiting for the investigation into what part the MEDIA had with driving that story into a frenzy.

And you just know they are going to whip it up with Rita; they're like the plant in Little Shop of Horrors. "Feed me, Seymour."
