Update: Category 5 Hurricane Rita - Live Thread, Part II
NHC - NOAA ^ | 21 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/21/2005 1:36:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Category 3 Hurricane Rita became the fifth major hurricane of the 2005 season during the night. Hurricane Rita threaded the needle through the Florida Straits and moved into the Gulf of Mexico. Storm damage in the Florida Keys and South Florida Peninsula was light, with scattered power outages, scattered tornados, and mild to moderate flooding.

Mandatory evacuations are in effect for Galveston County TX and New Orleans. Additional evacuation orders in the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area are anticipated throughout the day.

Crude oil prices reacted as oil producers shut down and evacuated workers from platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

Are you listening to these stupid reporters at the FEMA news conference? All they are concerned about is how this response is different than for Katrina. So far, the only thing I can tell is that they are going to use the US military right away, rather than waiting until after the storm.

The FEMA guy listed a bunch of supplies and disaster teams that have been pre-positioned. They asked him why this wasn't done for Katrina. He said IT WAS DONE FOR KATRINA. Stunned reporters wanted to know why there was all the troule in New Orleans. Guy said he wasn't going to go into that now. HAHAHA!

I am thinking about getting out of here if it turns into a Cat 5 and goes north.

If you are going to do that, you will need to leave by early tomorrow morning - early as in 4 am or so.

And realize - there are NO HOTELS anywhere to be found until you get to Oklahoma or New Mexico - and the storm is going to be tracking north through the Dallas metroplex and up into Oklahoma.

I called as far west as Midland and Fort Stockton and all the hotels were booked.

At the very least couldn't this produce some strong tornados in the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma?

Any tropical weather system can produce tornadoes at any time during its journey. But they are even more random and hard to predict than the hurricane itself so there's no point in fleeing because of tornadoes. Heck, if any folks are *used* to tornadoes, it's Oklahomans.

Well I'll tell you bub. I usually hate those jokes too. But I was tempted this time when I read one because it reminded me of what Jessie Jackson said about Bush and Black people. Of course it is crap. But you know some idiot is going to say it on the main stream media at some point.

Keep those Aggies safe.. we have them coming to Lubbock on November 5, for football. These type of trials makes us realize what is important. And our fellow Texans are all in our prayers.

alot depends on the shape of the channel, and the angle of incidence this thing take when it come ashore - that will have alot to do with wind direction.

what a mess.

Johnson Space Center is closed. All employees are to go home and prepare for the hurricane. The Russians are taking operational control of the ISS.

I got a real kick out of the ex-FEMA, Texan last night on MSNBC when asked about problems with Katrina said there were mistakes made, but to quote Gen, Honore' Texans aren't stuck on stupid and new how to handle a hurricane.

Prayer? At this point, I don't think anything else will.

He's been on this kick all day....or I should say, Fox News has. Sorry to be vague about names, but one of the Fox reporters "confirmed" that communications during Katrina were compromised because all the good stuff had been diverted to Iraq. I'll try to find the "source" for this report.
