The century's old observation that gold will never be worth zero is all the proof necessary to hold it.

I did not know that Sir Isaac Newton invented the rules for the Gold Standard. Is this really true?

Well, just like the old saying, "They aint making any more of it".

It's a bit ironic, that although he was an undisputed genius - even moreso than Einstein, some would say - Newton also engaged in Alchemy, which actually would have created more gold, if it were successful.

Actually more of it is being mined and smelted various parts of the world. But that hasnt dampened mans lust for the precious yellow metal.

If it takes tons of rock being crushed to yield an ounce of gold, I case can be made for "making" more of it. Then there is enough gold dissolved in sea water to make everybody rich~!

How many times have you heard gold described as the "barbarous relic"? It is a favorite phrase of gold-bashers everywhere trying to make gold the object of derision.

I spend an immense amount of time making fun of kooky gold bugs and economic apocalyptics, and not only have I never used the term "barbarous relic, I've never even heard of it.

Methinks a strawman argument.

--and furthermore, except for that buried as teeth and jewelery, virtually all of it that has ever been mined is still available---

He retired from his Cambridge duties in 1701. Ironically, it was his work at the Mint, rather than his contributions to science, which earned him a knighthood . . .

Britain went on to an unofficial gold standard in 1717 when Sir Isaac Newton, then Master of the Mint, established a fixed price of £3.17.10 ½d per standard (22 carat) troy ounce, equal to £4.4.11 ½d per fine ounce. Under the gold standard the value of the pound (measured in gold weight) remained largely constant until the begining of the 20th Century.

I begin to understand this insane reliance on international trade rather than producing products needed by our own population and selling to ourselves.

I have this annoying feeling that I just read an infomercial.

You did. But it actually had useful information in it.
