WASHINGTON - NASA briefed senior White House officials Wednesday on its plan to spend $100 billion and the next 12 years building the spacecraft and rockets it needs to put humans back on the Moon by 2018.
The U.S. space agency now expects to roll out its lunar exploration plan to key Congressional committees on Friday and to the broader public through a news conference on Monday, Washington sources tell SPACE.com.
U.S. President George W. Bush called in January 2004 for the United States to return to the Moon by 2020 as the first major step in a broader space exploration vision aimed at extending the human presence throughout the solar system.

Got a point. American was settled by joint-stock companies..
Yeah, but think if it like this.......at least the wing nuts who claim the original moon landings were nothing but a big hoax will be proven wrong once and for all. I actually know people who think this is true, that NASA faked the whole thing.
It's not worth that much money though.......
Thats a lot of Tang.
My understanding is that not only are the plans gone, but so are all the tools and machines necessary to build a Sat5.
Hey, I'll go -- so long as I'm stationed up there with Lt. Ellis.
It took all that rocketry just to get 3 guys and a gokart there the last time. It's not cost efficient for a long term stay.
I bet the the "tinfoil" moon hoax people are loving this.
Yes, but this time we're going to build a giant "LASER" there, and hold the Earth ransom for.... 1 million dollars! mu-wa-ha-ha, mu-wa-ha-ha
I thought the budget was still around $2.2 trillion, but the way the GOP spends these days it may be around $5 trillion. You're right about the NASA budget not being that much on a percentage basis, but I'd rather see the money spent more wisely.
How so? After $100 billion they'll just say that this was an even more elaborate hoax.
"Thats a lot of Tang."
And Space Food Sticks.
That's 0.167% of a $5tril budget.
$8 billion here. $8 billion there. Pretty soon you're talkin' 'bout serious money.
I am in favor of returning to the Moon..
but a question: Instead of spending 100 billion, why not pull the Apollo blueprints out of mothballs? If it worked then, it will work now.
Hmmm...perhaps it was all a hoax.
Shades of Heinlein.
They are going to use Shuttle technology which is almost as old. It will be over forty years old by the time the first trip is made, if it's made on time.
Well, considering that the original space program paid itself off several hundred fold in spinoffs and new technologies that led to growth. . . a good space program is effectively a VERY large Tax cut. . .
I heard the Sierra Club wants us to go back and pick up the trash.
a,
Primitive by today's standards, no doubt. You know, I read once that all the computation, software, and other thinkery that went into the 1969 mission would fit on a single CD.
Funny thing is, kids today can't go to elementary school without their parents thinking they'll be morons without high speed laptops.
Humanity did alot of neat stuff before microchips.
It all adds up...to $5,000,000,000,000,000...a few bucks at a time.
