Fleming senior wears racist T-shirt to school

"What's up with your shirt?"

Those are the words a former senior at Fleming Island High School remembers hearing as he walked from his fifth-period algebra class toward the gym. The 18-year-old, who is not being identified due to his family's concerns of safety, had just taken off his Dixie Outfitter T-shirt, exposing a highly offensive shirt.

"What about it?" replied the 18-year-old, skinny and white.

"Well, you know it's racial," said a black student, now in a group confronting the 18-year-old.

"Yeah. So?"

The undershirt the white student wore had a confederate flag on the front with the words "Keep it flying." On the back, a cartoon depicted a group of hooded Klansmen standing outside a church, waving to two others who had just pulled away in a car reading "Just married."

Two black men in nooses were being dragged behind.

Upset by the shirt, a 17-year-old black student hit the white student in the head. A crowd of about 100 students gathered to watch the Aug. 29 fight before authorities intervened.

I think that shirt definitely crosses over the "fighting words" line.

He deserved to get punched in the head - more importantly he deserves to be tossed out on his ear by the Marines.

Okay. There was a thread a few days ago about the head of Hillary Now saying "Freepers should be shot." If a Freeper had hit him, I doubt very much whether that Freeper could prove justification and escape civil or criminal liability. Joking about lynching is offensive, but it shouldn't justify physical assault.

As far as I'm concerned, the guy who hit this kid couldn't have been more justified. I think if put in the same situation, 98% of the human population would be "violent felons."

You did notice the description of the back of the t-shirt, right....the two black people being dragged behind the car in nooses? Sorry. Yesterday's local paper announced a gay pride parade in a nearby town this weekend. The paper said that groups opposed to gay "rights" plan to protest the parade, then mention the KKK as one of them. No other opposition group was mentioned by name.

Personally, I'd rather not protest a gay pride parage alongside klansman. It makes you wonder if they are really klansman, or just gay activists posing as klansman to give the illusion that the only people that oppose gay "rights" are nutcases and racial bigots.

Everybody has a right to freedom of speech/expression. OTOH, everybody has a responsibility to take the consequences of it. In this case, he got his consequences.
