Fleming senior wears racist T-shirt to school

"What's up with your shirt?"

Those are the words a former senior at Fleming Island High School remembers hearing as he walked from his fifth-period algebra class toward the gym. The 18-year-old, who is not being identified due to his family's concerns of safety, had just taken off his Dixie Outfitter T-shirt, exposing a highly offensive shirt.

"What about it?" replied the 18-year-old, skinny and white.

"Well, you know it's racial," said a black student, now in a group confronting the 18-year-old.

"Yeah. So?"

The undershirt the white student wore had a confederate flag on the front with the words "Keep it flying." On the back, a cartoon depicted a group of hooded Klansmen standing outside a church, waving to two others who had just pulled away in a car reading "Just married."

Two black men in nooses were being dragged behind.

Upset by the shirt, a 17-year-old black student hit the white student in the head. A crowd of about 100 students gathered to watch the Aug. 29 fight before authorities intervened.

Yes actions have consequences. I hope they both learned. The boy didn't press charges so there's hope yet.

Great point about showing restraint. That is what is missing here. Everyone is quick to say that the moron (number one) should have been punched, but only a few say the other moron should have done nothing.

Excellent points. you had some great NCOs, that is for sure. As we say in the Army: NCOs are the backbone.

You are right about running everything up to the Commander being a waste of time and resources. I believe good leaders can accomplish these things on their own, but there are the occasional problem children that aren't worth the effort or haven't learned after some wall-to-wall counseling. For them a quick Summary Article 15 may do the trick or even Company Grade Art. 15. After that, chapter the guy out for the good of the unit/service.

I hope the Marine you wrote about turned his life around for the sake of his family and the unit.

Behind the motor pool is always a good counseling area. Lots of privacy to get the point across.

1: "The black student helped reinforce the stereotype of blacks being violent."

2: "I don't think "I" contended that blacks are violent."

"Are you saying no blacks are? Are they less violent than whites or other races?"

I made no such assumptions. You were the one assigning a stereotype of violence to a group of people. You are the one who is using examples of affirmative action, Jesse Jackson, etc. to back your supposition that the young black man was the sole party in the wrong. Heck, you're even labeling it "black violence" when it should just be called violence. So tell me again that you're not approaching the subject with a biased outlook.

So, if another racist group use the American flag as it's symbol does THAT then become a racist flag????

Good question. Why don't we ask the folks in the 45th Infantry?

This wasn't a situation wherein someone got upset over perceived racism. This was the real thing. To compare it so and to put the onus of responsible behavior upon the black student shows your own bigotry, not to mention your contention that black people are violent.

Getting upset over racism is OK, but getting violent because of that is not OK. And I would say that assaulting someone is far more irresponsible behaviour than wearing a stupid T-Shirt.

Someone talked about a bull and its horns. But I hope that we may expect more from black Americans than from bulls? They are human, and at the center of human existence is the fact that we are free to make certain choices, with a sound mind. He chose to assault the white boy. He has to suffer the consequences.

I think the there is a bogus element to this story. I've been all over Dixie Outfitters website and I cannot find a tee shirt with any KKK connection, and I've been familiar with their products for a couple of years and have never seen the KKK in anything they make.

I think there's a slander suit in the making here.

Good points about the race aspect. The point I made about the stereotype that blacks are violent is a comedic element on TV - I have seen several movies that use this stereotype as if it's funny that blacks are violent and don't accept what white people do. The statement abou Jesse Jackson is to illustrate the stereotype again. Black Violence is a term used commonly in the news to describe violence by blacks. Can you honestly say you've never heard that? I never the black student was the only one wrong. I merely said he has no justification for assaulting the white kid. So, the kid with the t-shirt can be easily labelled "racist" but we can't use common terminology for the black kid? This whole story stinks. I am an objectivist and don't like the "group" thought at all, regardless of the group. Many posters here have been quick to say the white kid deserved to get beat up as if the black kid is justified "because" he's black. You want us/me to ignore the "black" part of this, but the fact that he's black is integral to his actions. Right? Either he is an offended black student or he is just another student. Which is it? Playing devil's advocate, I am bringing up points for discussion. I am not approaching this with any sort of bias.
