Damn. I thought this insurgency was in its "last throes". We needed more troops there from the beginning. Rumsfield's an idiot.

No number of people standing guard would prevent such a thing. The only thing which will is a total attitude change. The world needs to get really hard on the suicide bomber. You can't hange somebody for a suicide bombing; you go after his body, and you go after his family. You bury whatever's left of him in a box with a pig, and you kill his relatives and his village.

Rumsfield's an idiot.

Then again, he's not aphasic enough to log onto FR and post his opinion about any of us.

Um, one car bomb hit some day laborers. A moment's thought is enough to see how pathetically hopeless bombing the unemployed is as a strategy. How are people supposed to run out of unemployed? In war, running the enemy out of soldiers can win a war. Or, trying to get more supporters can prevent the other guy from doing the same. But making more enemies, and reducing only the other's guys pool of unused, idle labor? How is that supposed to add up to anything, ever? It won't. They haven't a prayer of winning anything this way.

That will help how? pack them in larger groups in the core of the city so they can act as buffers for EID's? We need better intel, so they can be rounded up, shot or arrested. This is urban war, you don't need a platoon on every street corner to chase one or two bad guys.

Welcome to FR, bozo. You forgot to claim that the Iraq war was waged just to make money for Halliburton, that the Jews escaped the WTC on 9/11, and that Bush dynamited the levees in NOLA.

My definition of an idiot is some keyboard commando who actually thinks he/she is smarter and better informed than our National Command Authority, National Security Council, our military commanders and the Iraqi government and military.

"Damn. I thought this insurgency was in its 'last throes'."

These spectacular but otherwise useless atrocities are carried out specifically to invite that conclusion from the media and their audience. They are staged media events, and their success is measured in the extent to which they can encourage opposition and political defeatism in the west.

Of course, they also enrage the victims. Right now, the Zarqawi forces are in a race against time. Can their random atrocities empower the anti-war movement and the media enough to produce a collapse of American will? Can this be done before these acts turn the Iraqi population completely against the Michael Moore Minutemen?

Each time someone generalizes from one of these staged events, the terrorists have another point in their favor, and further incentive to continue this barbarism.
