She says there's a weird sense of 'whatever' going on up there. They are putting off calling school out tomorrow, and news reports are saying "oh, scattered sections might lose power overnight" as if that's the extent of it. I guess after Isabel everyone's a little big for their britches.

Islands already slammed by surf. On Ocean Isle Beach, a 50-foot section of beachfront road was washed out by heavy surf and the only bridge to the barrier island was closed. Police had evacuated to an off-island safe house on Tuesday. N.C. ‘begging’ residents to flee Ophelia

How typical of liberals. They just aren't interested in people who tend to be self-sufficient and/or obey orders like "EVACUATE NOW".

Thanks for giving me the heads up. I was just about to turn the darned thing on and check out what the MSM was saying about Katrina. Better to just stay right here on this thread.

Swap out "Katrina" in my post and insert "Ophelia".

Flood watches extend all the way up to Baltimore...

Statement as of 3:48 PM EDT on September 14, 2005

... Coastal flood statement for minor coastal flooding at times of
high tide beginning Thursday...

Due to onshore winds from Hurricane Ophelia... and a prolonged
swell up the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay... minor coastal flooding
is expected to develop Thursday afternoon.

Below are predicted storm tides (astronomical tide plus storm
surge) in mean lower low water on Thursday for several locations
along the tidal Potomac and western shore of the Chesapeake bay:

Location: storm tide (mllw):

Solomons island: 3.5-4.5 ft at 1216 PM

Coltons point: 3.0-4.0 ft at 103 PM

Chesapeake beach: 3.0 to 3.5 ft at 202 PM

Annapolis usna: near 3.0 ft at 324 PM

Bowley Bar middle river: 2.5-3.5 ft at 545 PM

Alexandria: 4.0-5.0 ft at 642 PM

Baltimore inner harbor: 2.5-3.5 ft at 503 PM

High tides on Friday may also be a threat for minor coastal
flooding. Please continue to monitor this product for later
updates to this potential flooding situation.

Question.....how much foul weather can the outer banks take before they are lost to the sea? I'm on the west coast so my prayers are out for you guys in NC and surrounding areas in this slow moving storm.

Talked with my sister in Burgam - about 30 miles north of Wilmington. As of 30 minutes ago, still had power.

Thanks for that photo and those reports. Looks like this little storm is causing some major damage anyway.

We got a little bit of rain in the Triangle - surely would have liked more rain. But those on the coast, I know, wish the rain would go away.

Just looked at a three hour radar loop. The storm is pounding Morehead City in the eyewall. Movement is so very slow - it's excruciating.

The all day total was only 1 inch. It was slow and light for most of the day. Very little runoff, most soaked into the yard.

My wife's two friends from the Triangle area will check with her tonight so they can exchange stories. In-laws will run down to the mainland side of Holden's Beach in the next day or two to see how the weekend retreat came through.
