Hurricane Ophelia continues to churn off the off the coast of the Carolinas with a track that has confounded computer models and meteorologists for days. Hurricane watches are issued for much of the SC and NC coastline. Northern GA and southern VA coastal areas are currently within the three day cone of uncertainty. Check local NWS service for updates.

Rain gage just went past 1 inch. Still low clouds, gusty wind now and again with light scattered rain. No big deal.
Police scaner reports a few cars (traffic) flooded out in the lower sections of town with a few cars off the road here and there in the ditch.
Fire/Rescue traffic is about normal.

Looks like it's going to have an eye landfall stretching between Cape Lookout hoals on the east and Emerald Isle on the west. That takes in Indian Beach, Salter Path, Pine Knoll Shores, Atlanic Beach, Fort Macon, Beaufort, Morehead City, and Newport.
Then it's going to chew up and flood out the Down East areas all the way to Cedar Island.
Mom (in VB) says they are saying it's already a cat-2 storm. Shrug.. sounds nasty either way. Looks terrible on current radar. Y'all stay safe out there.
My cousin in Southport (between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach for those who don't know) is doing OK. Her house got about 8 inches of water during Floyd, so I was a little worried about that this time, but she says there's no standing water, no problems there, plus she has flood insurance THIS time. A tree fell on a transformer a couple houses down from her, so the power's out, but they have a generator and can run the TV and some fans. She says they're all fine, just sitting around watching the wind blow. Most of the rest of Southport still has power.
Further north, in Carteret County, this is nothing but an ol' 'mullet blow' to my relatives there, especially after getting slammed by Isabel a couple years back. They mostly have generators and know what to do. Taylor's Extended Care facility (nursing home) in Sea Level was evacuated yesterday, because they're CIVILIZED HUMAN BEINGS. My was a resident there before she died last December, and she was evacuated to Morehead City before Isabel hit. Because the ones who run the place are CIVILIZED HUMAN BEINGS.

My son went down to the river in Jacksonville to check wind speeds. They caught someone wind surfing ont he river.
