Lincoln holiday on its way out (West Virginia)

Lincoln holiday on its way out

By Phil Kabler Staff writer

A bill to combine state holidays for Washington and Lincoln’s birthdays into a single Presidents’ Day holiday cleared its first legislative committee Wednesday, over objections from Senate Republicans who said it besmirches Abraham Lincoln’s role in helping establish West Virginia as a state.

Senate Government Organization Committee members rejected several attempts to retain Lincoln’s birthday as a state holiday.

State Sen. Russ Weeks, R-Raleigh, introduced an amendment to instead eliminate Columbus Day as a paid state holiday. “Columbus didn’t have anything to do with making West Virginia a state,” he said. “If we have to cut one, let’s cut Christopher Columbus.”

Jim Pitrolo, legislative director for Gov. Joe Manchin, said the proposed merger of the two holidays would bring West Virginia in line with federal holidays, and would effectively save $4.6 million a year — the cost of one day’s pay to state workers.

Government Organization Chairman Ed Bowman, D-Hancock, said the overall savings would be even greater, since by law, county and municipal governments must give their employees the same paid holidays as state government.

“To the taxpayers, the savings will be even larger,” he said.

The bill technically trades the February holiday for a new holiday on the Friday after Thanksgiving. For years, though, governors have given state employees that day off with pay by proclamation.

Sen. Sarah Minear, R-Tucker, who also objected to eliminating Lincoln’s birthday as a holiday, argued that it was misleading to suggest that eliminating the holiday will save the state money.

“It’s not going to save the state a dime,” said Minear, who said she isn’t giving up on retaining the Lincoln holiday.

Committee members also rejected an amendment by Sen. Steve Harrison, R-Kanawha, to recognize the Friday after Thanksgiving as “Lincoln Day.”

“I do believe President Lincoln has a special place in the history of West Virginia,” he said.

Sen. Randy White, D-Webster, said he believed that would create confusion.

“It’s confusing to me,” he said.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Jeff Kessler, D-Marshall, suggested that the state could recognize Lincoln’s proclamation creating West Virginia as part of the June 20 state holiday observance for the state’s birthday.

Proponents of the measure to eliminate a state holiday contend that the numerous paid holidays - as many as 14 in election years — contribute to inefficiencies in state government.

PLEASE explain to this "ignorant southern boy" what YOUR understanding of the TENTH AMENDMENT to the BOR is. (you might post the 10th, for all to read too.)

First I would have to point out to the ignorant southern boy that there is no 10th Amendment to the Bill of Rights. There is a 10th Amendment to the Consitution.

Second, I would point out to the ignorant southern boy that the 10th Amendment details the division of powers between the states and the central government, but contains no clause or section detailing how the government can assume powers granted to the states or how the states can resume powers granted to the government.

Third, I would quote the amendment in full:

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

So where does it say that the states can resume powers?

The most capable tactical commanders were clearly allied with the confederacy, while the Union had the upper hand on the larger strategy that would later win the war.

Let's see. Hood, Ewell, Beauregard, both Johnstons, Polk, Bragg, Hill, Pillow, Pemberton, and on and on and on. Yep, tactical geniuses, all of them.

Other than Jackson and Lee, and maybe Forrest, the south was sadly lacking in 'capable tactical commanders'. Compare that with Grant and Sherman and Thomas and Reynolds and Hancock and McPherson and Sheridan and numerous others. The North comes out the winner.

The History Channel did a one-hour documentary on the Dahlgren papers in an episode of History's Misteries and all involved concluded that the papers were genuine and the orders to assasinate Davis and cabinet eminated from the White House.

That's nothing. The History Channel aired a six hour documentary on the men who killed Kennedy, which proved conclusively that he was the victim of an international conspiracy and was assasinated by men...who unfortunately were in jail at the time Kennedy was killed. Oh well, can't be right all the time.

>> West Virginia has the highest average elevation of any state east of the Mississippi River, and the most irregular boundary of any state.

And By God that is the way we like it.

The History Channel also had a program recently about how the pyramids in Egypt were built by beings from another planet.

What a shame, we thought you were on the road to recovery and you go and spoil all the hard work attempted by the deprogramming department with more neo-confederate barbs, blather and mornonic ravings.

Now Mac:

General Lee is considered a brilliant commander by West Point. It does you NO credit to insult him. He was brilliant. If he had the advantages the Federal Army had, the Confederacy would have WON.

He was brilliant.

One of the biggest myths of the Lost Cause was the brilliance of Robert E. Lee. Great leader perhaps, but brilliant commander I think not.

The Yankees chasing Stand all over Chattanooga have standing orders not to harm him, but once his inevitable capture is completed they shall simply place him a room with wall to wall Abe Lincoln wallpaper, coupled with a fine meal of Yankee pot roast & Boston cream pie. A few hours of that should do the trick :)

No, Thomas Jefferson (revolutionary). There was nothing legal in the actions of the founding fathers, and they didn't pretend that there was.

And Virginia accepted it. Viginia ratified it, in toto, as passed by the convention.

Hamilton wanted to reject the ratification. Madison convinced him that the terms stated were indeed not terms, as they were (pay attention now) inherent to the document itself.

It could not be more clear that the ratification is hinged on the terms stated. The powers that be had a responsibility to reject it if they felt they were inappropriate. Hamilton knew this. Hamilton knew that if he wanted the Constitution at all, he had to accept Virginia's compromise. Hamilton was overruled in New York and they inserted similar language. If he could get it, why is it that his modern-day apologists cannot?

I thought I already went over this: Grant and Sherman were the top strategic commanders, who had the larger vision to win the war... didn't I use almost those exact words? Maybe I made the post in "Virginia ratification" style, and so only certain words mattered?

And a bunch of Viagra commercials, no doubt. I swear, I can't watch anything with my kids these days, even football games are riddled with Cialis commercials... "Dad, what's that?... Well honey, older men take a pill and it makes them want to run on the beach with their wives and helps them to throw footballs through a tire swing."
