Waters were receding across this flood-beaten city today as police officers began confiscating weapons, including legally registered firearms, from civilians in preparation for a mass forced evacuation of the residents still living here.
No civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to carry pistols, shotguns, or other firearms, said P. Edwin Compass, the superintendent of police. "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons," he said.
But that order apparently does not apply to the hundreds of security guards whom businesses and some wealthy individuals have hired to protect their property. The guards, who are civilians working for private security firms like Blackwater, are openly carrying M-16's and other assault rifles. Mr. Compass said he was aware of the private guards, but that the police had no plans to make them give up their weapons.
Nearly two weeks after the floods began, New Orleans has turned into an armed camp, patrolled by thousands of local, state, and federal law enforcement officers, as well as National Guard troops and active-duty soldiers. While armed looters roamed unchecked last week, the city is now calm. No arrests were made on Wednesday night or this morning, and police received only 10 calls for service, a police spokesman said.
The city's slow recovery is continuing on other fronts as well, local officials said at a press conference late this morning. Pumping stations are now operating across much of the city, and many taps and fire hydrants have water pressure. Also, tests have shown no evidence of cholera or other dangerous diseases in flooded areas, though health officials have said the waters contain levels of E. coli bacteria and lead 10 times higher than what is considered safe.
Efforts to recover corpses have also started, although only a handful of bodies have been recovered so far.

G'nite all- way late...
Believe me its blowing me away too! I wish I could say I was surprised that the American government would do this to American civilians but I'm not. I knew this was coming for over aweek now.No government on earth is benevolent if it knows it can get away with not being benevolent without consequence.
So an inner city mob demanding welfare benefits and protections from police all the while committing crimes can bring the government to heel, but legal property owners wanting to live up to the right promised by the Constitution will die for demanding that right?
If that is true then this country is further down the tubes that we know. But, this scenario is exactly what the Builderbergers, UN, Council of Foreign Relations, and Communists want. The militia is a line they are not yet ready to cross because they are few in number and have a lot of wealth to lose.
Remember our discussion on the phone about how long it would be before your books became daily news? I think you said 2015 at the earliest. You were only off by 10 years!
Ultimately this will happen whenever a disaster of this kind gets out of the control of the ruling authority. They can't have individual American citizens making personal decisions about how to live their lives.
Besides which, those same ruling authorities cannot have 200 million privately owned weapons in the hands of individual American citizens if the global community of free markets and open borders is going to take shape.
And events of this kind will be the spark that sets the precedent for the confiscation you're seeing right now.
Actually, John, I was going to Freepmail an apology for my post - I was letting my tagline run away with me. After about 45 minutes of thinking about it, I concluded 'What the H*ll standing does a Tenn. Lawyer have in Louisiana, even if he was admitted to the SC?"
I DID say I wasn't sure about the declaration of martial law, in my first post on the subject. I saw maybe two references to that here on FR, and both were off-brand sources. That's why I said, "if" that was confirmed.
After a week of reading NautiNurse's Katrina Threads, (I still am having withdrawal symptoms since she stopped) I agree that there STILL is no solid documentation what whoever is behind the dummy in the LA Governor's office has had her do. (I think the term here is Eminence Gris, no?)
Heck, things in New Orleans are such a FUBAR right now that I don't know 1) IF anyone is seizing guns (other than shooters who are firing them in public)?, 2) If so, WHO is doing it? That isn't clear, either, and 3) WHAT AUTHORITY does whoever's doing it, claim for his/her actions.
Agreed. I've seen ONE case on tape, and have heard of others, but as we all know by now, rumor and fact are so completely mixed at this point, I despair of ever finding out what the truth is, under any circumstance.
In that sort of situation, even if I was there and authorized by a client to act, who would I sue, for what, and on what basis, and in what court? And that's without considering the high probability that any judge would say to himself, "I can't control this. I'll chuck the case now, and let that cigar-chomping Guard General straighten it all out. If somebody has a legal issue to b*tch about, let 'em come back and file a new suit when all the dust has settled."
Further, under the Napoleonic Code, CAN anyone in the LA State/Local Govt. be sued?
There are a number of situations in this life when the presence of more lawyers means that the situation can only get worse. I'm fairly certain that this is one of them, even if that lawyer is me, and a busload of other lawyers who are also legal conservatives.
ROFLMAO! Dear God, you KNOW I'm gonna save that one to nail you with, Later. (Eeevil Grin)
Plus there is the fact that no one has suggested in any way that they want me to stick my nose into this. Without a client to represent I AM "a potted plant," to borrow a phrase. LOL.
Agreed. However, after all the hot pistols on the threads cool off, Somebody's gonna have to sort this out. Think perhaps this will be an opportunity to get the 2nd Amendment nailed down tight at least until the Neo-Commies take over again? With A Roberts court, another Constitutionalist Justice coming up, and Ginsberg looking so poorly, y' 'spose we might have a shot?
Rich
You left out the Catholic Church, Sun Yung Moon, and the Illuminatis ... (tsk tsk)
I guess if the govt can play the "emergency card," then the BOR is null and void for as long as they say so.
I wonder if they will be relocating these forced evacuees on cattle cars?
KABC just showed the CHP mutual aid team forcibly remove a lady that said she didnt want to leave her house in New Orleans. They also confiscated her revolver.
Arent those officers sworn to uphold the constitution? And are they operating under LA. Governor Blanco's authority?
So, in the State of California, they are not allowed to force someone out of their homes as a brush fire approaches, but in another state under someone;s authority, are allowed to forcibly evict someone from their private house without an arrest warrant and confiscate their firearm under Mayor Nagin's unconstitutional order.
Let's pray it stays this way and a HORRIBLE precedent hasn't been set today...
Dang, THAT was a stupid thing to say. We HAVE turned a corner today..
I still can't believe I just saw that.
yeah if she was an illegal alien they would have walked away...
I'm glad I DIDN'T. What was the take on it by the newscaster? Gleeful or not?
Has that incompetent governor declared martial law yet?
Martial Law:
This article is about the governmental concept. For the television show, see Martial Law (TV).
Martial Law is the system of rules that takes effect (usually after a formal declaration) when a military authority takes control of the normal administration of justice.
Martial law is instituted most often when it becomes necessary to favor the activity of military authorities and organizations, usually for urgent unforeseen needs, and when the normal institutions of justice either cannot function or could be deemed too slow or too weak for the new situation; e.g., due to war, major natural disaster, civil disorder, in occupied territory, or after a coup d'état. The need to preserve the public order during an emergency is the essential goal of martial law. However, declaration of martial law is also sometimes used by dictatorships, especially military dictatorships, to enforce their rule.
Usually martial law reduces some of the personal rights ordinarily granted to the citizen, limits the length of the trial processes, and prescribes more severe penalties than ordinary law. In many countries martial law prescribes the death penalty for certain crimes, even if ordinary law doesn't contain that crime or punishment in its system.
In many countries martial law imposes particular rules, one of which is curfew. Often, under this system, the administration of justice is left to military tribunals, called courts-martial. The suspension of the writ of habeas corpus is likely to occur.

They showed some holdout lady, with two press members present, and the officers invite themselves in. She repeatedly says that she doesnt want to leave....they spliced in a shot of her revolver on the counter......then they swarm her.
They didnt arrest her, but they put her in the truck and confiscated her revolver.
For all I know she is on the train to Auschitz by now.
Someone had better file a lawsuit, quick.
At the very most pollyannaish, perhaps they only do this for people who refuse to leave. If you will leave maybe you get to leave your gun with somebody else. Except who else? The whole bloomin' town is being evacuated.
