New Orleans Begins Confiscating Firearms as Water Recedes
Ny Times ^ | September 8 | ALEX BERENSON and TIMOTHY WILLIAMS

Posted on 09/08/2005 3:40:23 PM PDT by RDTF

Waters were receding across this flood-beaten city today as police officers began confiscating weapons, including legally registered firearms, from civilians in preparation for a mass forced evacuation of the residents still living here.

No civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to carry pistols, shotguns, or other firearms, said P. Edwin Compass, the superintendent of police. "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons," he said.

But that order apparently does not apply to the hundreds of security guards whom businesses and some wealthy individuals have hired to protect their property. The guards, who are civilians working for private security firms like Blackwater, are openly carrying M-16's and other assault rifles. Mr. Compass said he was aware of the private guards, but that the police had no plans to make them give up their weapons.

Nearly two weeks after the floods began, New Orleans has turned into an armed camp, patrolled by thousands of local, state, and federal law enforcement officers, as well as National Guard troops and active-duty soldiers. While armed looters roamed unchecked last week, the city is now calm. No arrests were made on Wednesday night or this morning, and police received only 10 calls for service, a police spokesman said.

The city's slow recovery is continuing on other fronts as well, local officials said at a press conference late this morning. Pumping stations are now operating across much of the city, and many taps and fire hydrants have water pressure. Also, tests have shown no evidence of cholera or other dangerous diseases in flooded areas, though health officials have said the waters contain levels of E. coli bacteria and lead 10 times higher than what is considered safe.

Efforts to recover corpses have also started, although only a handful of bodies have been recovered so far.

Possibly. This disaster has set the perfect stage for a massive application of the recent "Kelo vs New London" eminent domain ruling.

And the landowners are going to be the recipients of massive amounts of federal largesse. If the owners turn out the be the politicians and their friends, well.....

Amoung other things...You are having a wet dream if you think these people will ever get there weapons back. Chances are that no record of the confiscation is even being kept. Good luck going up to these people a year from now and saying where is my gun? Can I have it back?

The answer will be...What Gun? No!

" --- While martial law has not been imposed, a state of emergency has been declared in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, signaling that some civil liberties, such as the right to congregate, may be limited because of extreme conditions."

The "extreme conditions" in New Orleans do not justify the confiscation of weapons from residents on their private property.

State & local authorities are exceeding their constitutional powers, and will [hopefully] pay the political price.

Exqueeze me? Without federal martial law, this is Constitutional?

That's what the author, [and probably most 'States Rights' advocates] would claim.. I disagree.

My guess is that this will eventuate in defeat for the gungrabbers.

If I cannot convince at least two more friends to join the NRA after this, I will be greatly disappointed. If the NRA cannot find the political will to turn this into an eventual victory, I will be more greatly disappointed.

I believe that we can make immense political hay from this.

But that's taking the long view. In the short view, this is as bad as I want to think about. The poster Petronski used the word "obscene", and that certainly is my feeling also. This is an obscenity, an unnecessary and ugly blight on the proud history of our nation.

I have this forlorn hope that whomever in government that is responsible for this heinous action is held responsible and prosecuted under as many laws as can be found (and I think that even civil rights legislation might be bent to this purpose.)

But my assumption is that no one will take responsibility for this action and certainly no official will be prosecuted for this disgraceful action.

The landowners may also be victims of emminent domain. Anyone who thinks Nagin and his city government wouldn't sell out small time private property owners needs to buy this bridge in Brooklyn from me...

Once civilian rule is reestablished, all those with permits to own and carry weapons should get them back, with no charges filed.

With respect, John, you know this ain't gonna happen.

They are clearing out the guns and the people because the city of New Orleans is soon to become the seat of power of the One World Government. Once everything is in place the Beast will rise out of the fathomless Pit and take the reigns of power and rule over the entire Earth. It's gonna suck big time.

So I guess no Mardi Gras next year.

Huh?

LEOs are civilians.

And if this is done illegally, what does it matter if you get your firearm/s back, anyway? The government will have gotten away with this and a precedent will be set.

My God don't you realize you don't need a permit to own a gun. I am glad you just raised money to run for office and didn't actually do it.

I know the most of the posts here are dealing with the fact that the police are taking away guns from law-abiding citizens, leaving only the criminals armed...exactly what our founding fathers enacted the constitution to forbid from happening, but I'd like to take issue with the Slimes on two points.

1. "hired by wealthy citizens" - At $15 or $20 an hour any family with insurance and savings could afford to hire a gaurd to protect their property. Is it possible that three middle class families banded together to hire a single gaurd? Why use the word "wealthy"? What is wealthy? Is there a cutoff? According to DEms it's like $70K. The Slimes again making the income earners the evil bad guys because they hired someone to protect their assets. Million bucks says there are gaurds at the front door of the Slimes even when there aren't looters running wild. It's okay for them to protect their assets and their personnel, but not the evil people in NOLA.

2. "Nearly Two Weeks after..." I've seen this going on throughout the media throughout this event. People stretching the timeline. First is was adding a day to the truth, now they're adding almost a week. The flood waters in NOLA came in on Tuesday. This story was written and filed on Wednesday for publication on Thursday. So exactly one week, plus one day. Does that equal "nearly two weeks"? No.

Hey slimes writers...how many times a day does the earth rotate in your world?
