Blanco rescinds Nagin evacuation order - my title
9/7/05 | me

Governor Blanco just said on Fox News Channel that Mayor Nagin does not have the authority to order evacuation of New Orleans, that the authority rests with her....and she doesn't have evidence that it is unsafe!

"Didn't Landrieu say earlier today that none of the relief money should go to FEMA, but should just go directly to Louisiana state officials?"

Not a dime should go to State officials. Louisiana hasn't had a decent government since Reconstruction.

Water service has been restored to part of the city, and the pumps are doing a pretty good job draining the city as well.

Guess that's good for you. Nothing worse than sleeping on an almost empty waterbed.

The only two people left are going to be her and Nagin. They'll each vote for themselves. How do we settle the tie breaker?

This will force the media to pay attention to who is the real roadblock here, and who had the authority last week and didn't act.

I wonder if the mayor has authority over the city police but he was trying to get the state National Guard to help (after Honore balked and told him he (Honore) did not have the authority to order his troops to mount a forced evacuation without the governor's authorization).

It's a pi$$ing match between state and local government.

Right now on WWL they have a state official (Must be French-French, too much an accent to be a cajun) talking for 20 minutes on how the water is not that bad.

Their must be some legal issues. They don't want to declare the water so bad, so they don't have to assert extraordinary powers. Not that I'm for them, but the motive seems to be a concern powers will be ceded to the Feds.

watching WWL...some French guy saying it might not be polluted...

Just because the water smells better than the French does NOT mean it's not polluted. :-)

There's an ulterior motive.

LA Emerg Mgmnt kept Red Cross from going to the Superdome so as to not "make it a magnet " for volunteers that might get in the way of an evacuation

Major Garrett of Fox just reported FEMA and Red Cross had supplies of food, water, toiletries to bring to Superdome and Convention Center last week BUT WERE ORDERED NOT TO by the LA Homeland Security Dept.
They did not want to draw more people to these areas. This is Hugh!

I'm starting to think that either this woman is the stupidest person to ever walk the earth, or that some of her antics have been done purposely so the blame can be put on President Bush by the media and the dems.

(Live in the Pacific NW). I understand and pride myself on being self sufficient. However, Sometimes one has to be pragmatic instead of stubborn.

Do you think that the decision on being pragmatic vs stubborn is your decision, or Christine Gregoire's?

"The mayor certainly has ordered that but the governor, and that would be me, would have to enforce it or implement it. We are trying to determine whether there is an absolute justification for that," she told FOX News.

Well, Governor Blanco, from everything I have heard, New Orleans is perfectly safe and dry and ready for everyone to move back home.

Don't worry your pretty little head about it at all. All this talk about a flooded, toxic wasteland is just negative energy. If you think New Orleans is still a great place for folks to live, who are we to question you?

I'd ask if you're series, but I've seen enough to know you are. Did you know buses were sent from other cities to evacuate people, and they were turned away?
