Barbara Bush comments on survivors spark outrage
Sydney Morning Herald ^ | 9/7/05

Comments about Hurricane Katrina victims by the mother of President George Bush have fuelled the ire of some Americans, who see the Bush family as out-of-touch patricians. The refugees in Houston, Texas, were "underprivileged anyway" and life in the Astrodome sports arena is "working very well for them", former first lady Barbara Bush said in a radio interview.

"Almost everyone I've talked to says: 'We're going to move to Houston,' " Mrs Bush said late on Monday after visiting evacuees at the Astrodome with her husband, former president George Bush.

"What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality," she said.

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this - this is working very well for them."

Her comments were aired on Marketplace, an American Public Radio show broadcast nationwide. They triggered a flood of negative messages on the Huffington Post, a popular left-leaning blog.

"Cold hearted witch," read one of the more polite comments, signed by IowaDem.

"No wonder her son remained on vacation, playing guitar and eating cake instead of seeing that aid and rescue operations were well-managed."

Another writer found the comments hard to believe. "Did she really say that?" wrote 'Stephen.' "My God! What or who have we become?"

Meanwhile, "Katrinagate" fury has spread to US media.

"For God's sake, are you blind?" a woman shouted at Michael Brown, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). "You're patting each other on the back, while people here are dying."

Amazing how the big lie continues, isn't it. From the toxic pages of The Nation around the world.

What she was saying was that Houston had taken these people in, they were finding new jobs and a welcoming community and that, in the end, their lives would be better than they had been.

You remember when Bubba got in trouble for the dumb things his mother used to say?

.....No, me neither.

Hey evacuees! Houston sucks!! ...really!

Austin is the absolute best, then Dallas!

I'd head there. Remember, Houston Sucks.

But Celine Dion said they are so poor just let them touch anything they want! Meanwhile she fails to give away her riches helping them.

Where were all these warm-hearted liberals and leftists when these flood victims were living in ghettoes in New Orleans and putting up with the highest crime rate in the nation?

Is Teddy Kennedy going to open up his compounds in Palm Beach and Hyannis for the flood victims? How about John and Teresa?

Rush was saying today that an LA Times column and the evacuees in Houston themselves were saying the same things.

Many of them will never return to NO.

The Bush family have busted their butts for so many people for so many years it's probably impossible for an accurate list to be compiled of the people they have helped.

Anyone that thinks George HW Bush and Barbara Bush are not people filled with immense compassion for others is simply an idiot.

And isn't it interesting, while I was in the car today I heard Rush read several interviews with some survivors. They are desperately poor and feel they've been given a second chance in Houston, where they plan to stay.

They said it will be good to be away from the gangs, crime and dirty atmosphere in New Orleans. Just what I'd been mentioning for a few days in trying to support Barbara Bush's comments.

So the left can just take a number and keep piling up with their ridiculous comments because at this point they sound like real first class jerks.

Barbara could have said the sky is blue and the sun rises in the east and it would have triggered negative comments from this crowd.

Oh yes you know they will. Just think they have 5 houses and I'll bet they are all heated in the winter and cooled in the summer so that they can take that BIG plane they have and use each home when the spirit moves them.

"They triggered a flood of negative messages on the Huffington Post"

Bush waking up in the morning triggers a flood of negative messages on Huff 'n Puff. Anyone who uses Huff as a source has no credibility themselves.

Someone sent me an email from a fellow that was born and raised in New Orleans. Here is part of what he said:

The poor of New Orleans...black, white or otherwise have been kept uneducated and ignorant not only by politicians who play to there baser instincts to keep them in line but by there own leaders in the community that derive power from there servitude. Coming to Texas breaks this lock. It opens them to new horizons and new possibilities. I ran into two ladies and a child the other day in my neighborhood who were from New Orleans. They were staying at a shelter set up at a church nearby. I introduced myself as being from New Orleans. They explained their plight but they also said how much they appreciated the hospitality and kindness. They also raved about the area. One lady described it as "Heaven on Earth". She told me she was looking for a new start and how she wanted to turn her life around. They lost everything...but they didn't have much to begin with. Here was a new place with new potentials. Here was a place with real schools and real police to protect them. Here is a place where the thugs that controlled them criminally and politically had no hold and no control.

Austin and Dallas really have nothing to offer. I heard Sugarland just south of Houston is like a free candy world. You shoud go there. streets are paved in chocolate.

Theres always Mexico too.
