Such emotional scenes were repeated perhaps thousands of times along the Gulf Coast last week as pet owners were forced to abandon their animals in the midst of evacuation.

This is incredibly sad, victims who have lost their homes and loved ones being forced to abondon their pets by rescue personnel. Is it really necessary?

let me be the first: Its George Bush's fault for not activating the federal branch of peta and the spca in time. George Bush hates animals.

Where is/was PETA?

They know what to do with animals.

They fed their guinea pig and left it in its cage in a patient room. They couldn't refill its empty water bottle because the hospital's plumbing failed Sunday, they said.

:-( We have 7 guinea pigs. No offense to the human loss, but my wife and I, being guinea pig lovers, were also thinking about all the poor little critters who suffered in this mess.

My family would be very upset to have to leave behind our dogs, although from a standpoint of practicality, the animals must be left behind.

I wouldn't leave my Huskies, even if ordered. They keep running the clip of that lady in New Orleans who is going to be evac'd but they told her she couldn't take her dog and she was broken up about it. That just sucks.

my wife wouldn't leave our older Husky for anything either.

There seem to be no hard and fast rules.... some rescuers and shelters are talking both people and pets, others not.

It certainly wasn't necessary in all the cases where it was apparently enforced. HORRIBLE.

Guardian (UK) ^ | 9/3/05 | Mike Stobbe
ATLANTA (AP) - As Valerie Bennett was evacuated from a New Orleans hospital, rescuers told her there was no room in the boat for her dogs. She pleaded. ``I offered him my wedding ring and my mom's wedding ring,'' the 34-year-old nurse recalled Saturday. They wouldn't budge. She and her husband could bring only one item, and they already had a plastic tub containing the medicines her husband, a liver transplant recipient, needed to survive. Such emotional scenes were repeated perhaps thousands of times along the Gulf Coast last week as pet owners were forced to abandon their animals in...

The only contributions I have given so far in response to the storm have been to the Humane Society.

While I fully understand the reasoning behind the no pet rules, maybe we need to address the issue. The truth is, many people simply won't leave their animals and having to go back in to rescue those who won't might, in the long run, be more costly to all of us than planning in advance for a few shelters where pet owners can go. I'm not sure how to work out the problems with such shelters, but perhaps their is a way.

If I lived on the coast and heart that a Hurricane was coming I would pack a few pair of pants, shirts, undies, my lap top, a bag of dog food, and my dog. It would take less than 30 minutes and I would be GONE. No way am I gonna risk my dogs life and my life just to "ride out a hurricane." That's nuts.

Those who willingly stayed behind killed their pets. Those who couldn't afford to leave ... the Mayor killed them by not deploying the buses to evacuate the poor people.

I saw some woman on Fox News bawling because she wouldn't leave if her dog could go with her. "I want to go," she whined. "But I just can't...".

This is what happens when we don't put animal life in its proper context. Yes, I have a pet. Yes, I love my pet. But if it came down to staying in a disaster area or abandoning my pet, the animal is on its own. Sorry if that sounds heartless but I can always buy/adopt another one.

Here's an idea for you, honey. Walk.
