News'We feared for our lives in the hell of the Superdome' by ROBIN YAPP, Daily Mail

Survivor: Jane Wheeldon
Britons returning from the horrors of New Orleans have told how they feared for their lives as violent gangs ran out of control. Tourists and backpackers arriving back in the UK said the city's Superdome, initially sought out as a safe haven from Hurricane Katrina, had quickly turned into a place of fear. They witnessed scenes of murder and looting, women were threatened with rape and racial tensions grew daily. Have your say » Survivors praised the US military for protecting them but condemned British Embassy officials as 'useless' for failing to help or provide information to relatives.
A handful of Britons who sheltered in the Superdome arrived back at Gatwick on flights from Dallas.
Amid emotional scenes as they were reunited with their families, three girls wept as they recalled their experiences.
Jane Wheeldon, 20, a student from Carmarthen, South Wales, said: "We were the prime target. Guys would come up and stroke your back and your tummy and your bum to find any money you had on you. Everyone was staring and it was so intimidating.
"They said, 'white people are not welcome here'. Then the looting started and the gangs were smashing up the drinks and cigarette machines."
Do we still have cigarette machines in the SuperDome?
Welcome to New Orleans!
New Orleans will not be back. It's over.
Waiting for the mayor to apologize to the whites.
"Do we still have cigarette machines in the SuperDome?"
No smoking in the dome.
LMBO!!!!!
That was hysterical! LOL
I agree.
But even if they rebuild, I think tourism is gone.
How will NO survive? {shrug}
Nagin is the New Sheriff of Rockridge!
So, who is surprised, I for one am not.
(If I had a nickle for every time I've deleted what I wrote before posting it I'd have $1.10 or so).
Here's the southeast Louisiana evac plan supplement, most recently revised in 2000. Go to page 13, read paragraph 5. It states:
5. The primary means of hurricane evacuation will be personal vehicles. School and municipal buses, government-owned vehicles and vehicles provided by volunteer agencies may be used to provide transportation for individuals who lack transportation and require assistance in evacuating.
Why should they rebuild?
It's not as if there was minor damage--places that could be repaired.
The place is gone and I see no logic in rebuilding on a disaster site.
Build a tourist mecca like the French Quarter a little further back, maybe, but a town?
Why? Build a new Nawleens further inland and hope it turns out better than the old one.
Why spend huge funds on a levee when the town is gone?
I know there's a sentimental thing going, but sometimes one just has to be sensible.
Let's get the ACLU to sue Great Briton for allowing one of it's citizens to 'dis NO (or speak the truth.)
Welcome to America!
it is amazing there was no notable security presence in the superdome while letting that number of people in for an unknown amount of time.
Wilding was the sport of the aftermath of the parade.
Police incapable of responding to this totally unexpected event.
People were actually being funnelled into the Park where the attacks took place.
These animals were equal opportunity attackers, as were the thugs in the dome.
