Qatar gives 100 million dollars for US hurricane relief 1 hour, 26 minutes ago

DOHA (AFP) - The Gulf emirate of Qatar announced it will donate 100 million dollars to relief efforts for the US victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The aid was granted by Qatar's emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani "in the name of the government and the Qatari people," the official news agency QNA said.

Quoting a foreign ministry spokesman, QNA said: "Qatar expresses its sympathy and its solidarity to the US people and government in these painful circumstances and sends its condolences to the families of the victims in this humanitarian catastrophe."

Three other Arab countries -- Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates -- have also offered aid to the United States.

Qatar, just produce more oil than your quota to drive down prices and we'll love you even more!

I played Qatar in The OPEC Game in a Masters class. Their production capabilities are amoung the lowest of the OPEC countries, and they almost have to cheat on the OPEC quotas to survive.

Close enough. I think the "q" is a romanization of the voiced version of the asperated k. The "kh" is like the Scottish "loch" or German "ch" (not Austrian.) A better romanization is "gh" but for some reason, "q" is often used. (Like an anglophone should criticize anyone else's spelling.)

Arabic is a Semitic tongue and kin to Hebrew. There's an Arabic letter analogous to the Hebrew quph, from which the Latin Q came.

Our son sent us photos of him drinking, sand surfing, drinking, shopping, drinking, riding a camel, and drinking.

...then tell your son for me that his R&R was a total waste of time!.......surfing, shopping and camel riding can wait till he gets home! Mr. Experience talking here

No matter which country is sending us help, IMHO we should send them our heartfelt and gracious thank yous.

My hugs to Qatar, Sri Lanka and all nations who have helped our fellow man in the southern United States.

Most likely. As soon as some of the local trash took a pot shot at them, it would be garbage pickup day rather quickly. While most Americans would at least be thinking "good work!", the political problems would even be worse than they will be when American troops find it neccesary to dispose of freelance socialists.

You are wrong. Al-Jazeera is not state-run. To what extend the Qatari government tolerates it, I don't know, but al-Jazeera is not Qatari state TV.

Excuse me. But every TV station in the Arab world is state run. There are no private stations. Qatar could stop the anti-Iraqi crap on it's alJazeera station tomorrow.

Excuse me. What is the difference between Al Jazeera and CNNABCNBCCBS?

LOL. His phone calls home during those three days were memorable. More to us than him I think.

qatar has always sounded like a country that had it's act together.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, it is a monarchy ruled by an emir who overthrew his father. The legislature is appointed, not elected. (see: http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/qa.html).

It seems to me this is exactly the sort of nation we ought to be working to change, especially if you look at the President's undying mission to spread freedom and democracy to the Muslim world.

I hope folks aren't suggesting that just because they give us basing rights and a $100 million that everything is fine.

How good of them. They really didn't have to do this, and I'm sure they might get some flack from their neighbors. Yet they stepped up to the plate and gave very generously.

Thank you, Qatar.

"Al-Jazeera continues to broadcast because it reportedly receives $100 million a year from the government of Qatar. Without this subsidy it would be off the air, off the Internet and out of business."
Quote from Dorrance Smith, (April, '05) senior media adviser to Ambassador Paul Bremer.

As I have said previously, if Qatar wanted to, they could stop the hate America/pro-terrorist talk on AlJazeera, tomorrow.
