Qatar gives 100 million dollars for US hurricane relief 1 hour, 26 minutes ago
DOHA (AFP) - The Gulf emirate of Qatar announced it will donate 100 million dollars to relief efforts for the US victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The aid was granted by Qatar's emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani "in the name of the government and the Qatari people," the official news agency QNA said.
Quoting a foreign ministry spokesman, QNA said: "Qatar expresses its sympathy and its solidarity to the US people and government in these painful circumstances and sends its condolences to the families of the victims in this humanitarian catastrophe."
Three other Arab countries -- Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates -- have also offered aid to the United States.

Russia offered aid and the USA turned it down.
We need an official accounting of "offers of aid", the ACCEPTANCE of the offers and some totals.
Until the aid is received and USED, these are all shallow words.
Some nations may offer aid and never deliver it. The USA may never accept it.
I am a numbers guy. I want facts. Offer, accpetance, actually received and used, and totals.
100 million bucks. Im eating crow as a result of some comments I made the other day. The size Qatar's donation makes it easy to swallow..
Let them use their resources to help themselves.
their citizens are dying every day from violence
True, and our dear military is right along with them and if they used their resources to help themselves, no need for our 'contribution' but.....
President Bush, during one of his short remarks, was asked about international aid and brushed it off. To paraphrase, he said the the United States is going to handle this on our own. This was about Thursday if I recall--I saw it on live TV.
Does anybody have the video or transcript of that. I saw it and it was as clear as can be--he turned down offers of assistance from foreig nnations. Russia was one of the first nations to offer assistance.
Now that many nations are starting to pledge or promise (who knows if they will deliver), the President may be forced to take the aid.
Anyway, who has the link/transcript of Bush turning down the aid?
But I'm glad that I sent it, and I thank the Qataris for their help also.
This is very kind and we are a very grateful nation. Thank you, Qatar.
sl, a ping to you.
The leader of Qatar and his wife are the bomb. They are the ones who were on 60 minutes a year or so ago saying they didn't think it was best for their country to be a monarchy any more because it isn't good for the rights of the regular folks. And, he and his wife are the monarchs! I hope we stay close to good people like this. Of course you don't hear in the MSM of the great successes that countries like Qatar are having or have been having for many years now. Check out the state-of-the are research hospital they recently built. Or, all the pretty girls without their faces forced to be covered.
*state-of-the-art
Yes they are, and they've been pretty decent to us. My B-I-L works for Centcom (retired Navy, now working his old job as a civilian) and heads over there several times a year. Is on his way there now in fact. Thanks, Qatar.
Qatar is a staunch ally. They know what Saddam would have done had we not kicked him out of Q8 in '91 and then smashed him flat in '03.
After which you can add: "Yo, Dude!" (remembering to capitalize the 'D'.)
"essentially free from government interference."
" Al-Jaz is privately owned and operated."
You can think that.
Al Jazeera isn't a government run entity.
You didn't find an email address for them did you ???
I maybe wrong but I believe Quatar isn't about oil economically....there thing is natural gas (LPG)...
They did the same in Australia after the Bali bombing. They were the official source for donations - people gave a lot. But an investigation by journalists a year later found that almost nothing (a few token thousands out of millions) had been spent on victims of the bombing. The rest was being kept by the Red Cross for their "research" activities.
Only in the last few days, from posts like yours, have I learnt that they pulled the same stunt with Sept 11.
It is outrageous. And they were very arrogant when questioned about it, too.
I thought they were a very rich country because of all the oil.
Don't worry, some around here will urge Bush not to accept the dirty "mooslim" money. That was my first thought as well.
