It’s very strange and maybe just coincidental. But have you noticed that it's the "Republican" Red states taking all the refugees from Louisiana?

A little off topic, but am I alone in despising Sheppard Smith?

There is another way bloggers and other thoughtful people can help: I have opened forums at www.DisasterReliefIdeas.org for the discussion of ideas to aid disaster relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I am not soliciting donations, only ideas. Experts in aspects of disaster relief (housing, healthcare, rebuilding, etc.) are also able to rate these ideas, giving us a means of identifying the most promising ones, which will be shared with disaster relief professionals and persons in authority. Please help our society by contributing your ideas, especially if you are unable to contribute financially to relief efforts.

I may be naive, but why aren't military A-130's airdropping supplies?

Just got home from a wedding. The warnings about gas this weekend are either 1) true or 2) giving station owners carte blache to gouge.

Example: as of 12:45am EST, a major gas station in Kingsbridge, Bronx had caution tape over the pumps with signs saying "out of regular and plus" Of course you could get premium for $3.89.

I don't have any f'ing common sense, thank you. I'm only here to inform people that sometimes people on the dole or whatever you like to call poverty....are not always able to drive out of town when a cat 4-5 hurricane is coming.

Also, as a Florida resident I want to inform the know-it-alls that when you are able to drive out of town -- like we wanted to in 2004 ahead of hurricane Frances ... the motels and hotels are completely full, no vacancies.....

What entity do FReepers do think is the most efficient place to donate? I'm wary of the Red Cross after the 9/11 'administrative' overhead expose. Moreover, I'm not interested in donating to any entity with an agenda (including leftist and/or missionary types), although the Salvation Army seems OK.

.....and because we couldn't find a hotel or motel that wasn't booked up we spent -- wife, me, two kids and dog -- one heck of a miserable four days without electricity. Food and drink we had, (lucky us) -- but not having air-conditioning and TV and all the amenities we were used to really got to us by the second day it wasn't like camping out anymore.

WE NEED HELP ON THIS THREAD ABOUT THE LOUISIANA NATIONAL GUARD

The President issued an emergency declaration on Saturday at the request of the Governor. That the the feds certain power over coordinating activities. But who was in charge of the Louisiana National Guard? The President is being blamed because it took three days to get water there.

Here is the problem. People are going off that if we are not prepared for this, what about terrorism. We are prepared to respond to terrorist attacks. We have been so focused on terrorism since 9-11 that the government forgot the biggest danger to America - mother nature. The money is not being spent to prepare for natural disasters like it is for terrorism. How do I know this? Because my mother is a EMA director in Ohio, her biggest issue with FEMA (it really is Homeland Security in charge, not FEMA) is that the federal funds focus too much on terrorism alone and not on ALL possible disasters. This will have to be a lesson for all gov't on how they handle preparing for all disasters.

9:15 A.M. - (AP) Since the hurricane, people have displayed a massive outpouring of charity. Total donations passed the $200 million mark by Friday, four days after the storm slammed into the Gulf Coast. The bulk of those funds were collected by the Red Cross, which said it has raised $196.9 million from individuals and corporations.

My roommate (a reserve in the Ohio Army National Guard) got called up yesterday to go to NOLA and they are deploying THIS AFTERNOON. Talk about turnaround time!

Godspeed to them.
