President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

You are probably correct.

What surprises me is that later in that article it mentions that NO didn't want to federalize the project because if something went wrong, they'd be blamed.

That doesn't make sense, of course, because if something went wrong and the project was federalized, it's the feds who would take the brunt of criticism.

She would lose control of the money, like the paltry sum she spent hiring Clinton's FEMA goon James Lee Witt.

I'm wondering who's wallet Witt's fee is coming out of.

When are the folks in LA gonna get fed up with this excrement?

Overall, it was a terribly convoluted WP story. Seriously, it might be worth copying the article into a text editing program and parsing the numerous subjects.

When I first read it last night, there appeared to be good info buried amid emotional hyperbole. That seems to be the case again this morning.

Did ya'll see Andrew Young's interview on CNN? He is from New Orleans and a former UN Ambassador and mayor of Atlanta. It was great.

The interviewer asked him if he felt there was racism involved and were blacks the ones that suffered most. He said you know you kept seeing pictures of the inner city which is mostly black. He said the outer edges of the city were mostly poor white people and that they were hit hard because they were on low ground. He said that he talked to a white girl at a shelter that was in the water for 48 hours before she was rescued and watched bodies of her neighbors floating by which were mostly white. He said he didn't believe that the deaths would be mostly black, but more likely an equal number between the races. The interviewer said so you think there is no racism involved? And Mr. Young said, 'No. I don't think so.'

He said positive things about the government response and the interview asked in what I thought was an incredulous tone, 'So you think the government response was good?' Mr. Young said, 'Yes.'

"can someone update overnight news?" Mornin'.

The Superdome evac is complete. There are still problems with some people refusing to leave their flooded homes. Zero reports of violence.

Yes, Chief Justice Rehnquist has passed on.

"While President Bush eventually cut his vacation short by two days, the others did not deem the crisis significant enough to return to work."

I'm so sick and tired of these idiots harping on the Pres being on 'vacation' for a month or 4 or 5 weeks. First, he's never really on vacation, 2nd - if they'd bother to check out his August schedule (link below to WH Press site) they'd see that on Monday he was in AZ discussing Medicare and on Tues he was in CA commemorating the 60th Anniversary of VJ Day. The rest of the month he was working on a variety of items/issues.

Your post about the barge

I saw a film of Chalmette done by locals on tv last night. And there was that barge! And the big broken levee. The local said that barge appeared to break a concrete levee. It was near the lock in Chalmette. I don't know the area at all but it looked as if the barge made St Bernard flood.

Anyone know the area?

My husband swears that the talks way back when on the "plan" for a levee breach assumed that it would be massive and fast and tens of thousand would die.

He says the problem is the breech didn't occur as fast as they thought it would. So people had time to get up high, to get to the dome, etc.

So the problem was the leak happened over time. If it had happened faster, there would be no survivors on the order of what we have here. Just bodies. And everyone would be in funeral mode. Not rescue mode.

The plan was not to rescue at all assuming very few survivors.

does this make sense?

LOcal reporter asked Blanco why she was hiring Witt, didn't she have people to meet with FEMA. She flared and in a self rightous tone said that she was known for hiring the best consultants and she wasn't going to stop now. She looked so self congratulatory and everyone clapped. I woulda thown up but decided to wait till later.

She is a scared woman, I see it on her face.
