New Orleans City Council President: "Maybe God's Going To Cleanse Us"

NEW ORLEANS, September 1, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The popular adage, "there are no atheists in the trenches" sums up the truth that in times of disaster it is natural for people to turn to God, for help and also for an explanation. The devastation wrought by hurricane Katrina has brought that reality home to the United States, particularly in the affected regions.

. . . New Orleans City Council President Oliver Thomas after witnessing the horrors first hand and hearing talk of Sodom and Gomorrah commented, "Maybe God's going to cleanse us."

The theme of cleansing or purification has become a frequently discussed topic as the tragedy in the affected states unfolds. European papers have suggested that Katrina was the punishment the US received for failing to sign onto the Kyoto accord, Islamic militants have rejoiced that "private" Katrina has joined in the holy war against the U.S. for - among other things - the Iraq war. Some have even suggested that the hurricane was God's punishment on the U.S. for cooperating in the removal of Jews from the Gaza strip.

However, beyond these speculations is a more general acknowledgement that New Orleans, the epicentre of the disaster, was a "sin city" which harboured few rivals. The New Orleans "southern decadence" festival which was to take place Labour Day weekend, is described by a French Quarter tourism site as "sort of like a gayer version of Mardi Gras" which is "most famous (or infamous) for the displays of naked flesh which characterize the event," with "public displays of sexuality . . . pretty much everywhere you look."

And I'm well aware of the difference. Let me guess, white throne if for lost folk, bema for Christians?

DS, my FRiend - I can't even be bothered with these creeps anymore. I'm sick and bloody tired of these holier-than-thou types who choose to judge others...I will keep them in my prayers, but I sure won't be doing much more than throwing their crapola right back at them.

I know.

But it is the sneering holier than thou attitude of some that will be why there are surprises in store when all of this is said and done.
There are going to be people who most are certain will make it in, and they won't.

Maybe someday I can reach your level of perfection.

Level of perfection is such a difficult thing to think about... consider the fact that there no one perfect. but it's better to focus on your relationship with God not on achieving a certain level of perfection... a relationship with God leads anyone to a state of self-worth and purposeful living..

Everyday in my life is a warfare... i want to do something everyone loves that God hates, but that relationship i got with Him is so strong that it always win every battle.

You can have it too.

I wrote: If these Khmer butchers are sincerely repentant, does your religion say are they saved?

Anyone who truly turns to Jesus Christ will be saved. No matter how ungodly he or she may have been. Now, there is a lesson on God's grace.

The Khmer victims were overwhelmingly non-Christian, and therefore going to Hell forever, if I understand your religion correctly.

So your religion would say that these saved Khmer murderers are headed to eternal paradise, and their victims are headed to eternal Hell. Yes or no?

Thank you, my FRiend.

If I wanted to participate in a religion forum, I would find one.....I'm here for news, information, and a bit of give and take amongst friends...not pontification or evangelizing...there is a section of this website just for that and I wish these HTT types would keep it there.

I've had a long day, tomorrow (actually today) is another one, I need to catch some sleep.

Talk with you soon.......and again, my thanks.

Welcome.
I didn't appreciate what he said to you.
May he eventually figure out what was so wrong with it.

And thanks.
See you later on tomorrow.

Since I do not agree that God would kill thousands of innocents I belong on DU? Their are quite a few more places on the planet that, if God wiped them out, would make better targets. Mecca, Beijing, are just a few that come to mind.

My position on this has been consistent thru various threads and that position is that God would be a little more accurate if he wished to punish a city and that he would pick a more valuable target.

Potential future (LA) Democratic campaign slogans,

For Kathleen Blanco:

Aren't you folks glad you gave an incompetent Frenchwoman the chance to preside over this great state, instead of that icky East Indian fellow who knows more about health care than any other public official in the country? Vote for me for your next massive public health/crime crisis and/or natural disaster!

For Mayor Nagin:

I'm kind of like Rudolph Giuliani...if he sucked.

The flood, Sodom and Gomorrah among others.

Try reading your Bible rather then skiming the highlights.

In the case of the flood there was only one good person left on earth. In the case of Sodom and Gomorrah there were not 10 good left in the whole valley.

I know for a fact there were a LOT more then 10 good in NO.

Try this verse instead, "It rains on the just and the unjust."

Apparently, CA doesn't see this as a warning, the legislature passing a gay marriage bill yesterday. And they are sitting on a maze of fault lines with the "Big One" overdue. The Bible warns: The wheels of God's justice grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly fine. Only a tiny minority in our land hee that warning, but the Almighty God is a majority of One.

Well apparently you didn't actually hear Him.

That voice came from a little lower down.

Who set you up as the Judge of my heart?

You did. Judge not THAT YE BE NOT JUDGED.

You judged the hearts of others. That means that we are allowed, no Commanded to judge you.

Just call us "Fruit Inspectors." As in "The Fruit of the Spirit is Love, Joy, Peace, Long suffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness and Temperance."

So far from you I have seen no such fruit. Unless you start showing it you have no right to call yourself one of His.
