Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

But...the agents got there to evacuate some of the people to the superdome? Was there no food and water to take with them to give out? And not all helicopters were grounded today. It's a tragedy.

"The president and government who had a week's advance notice of Katrina, yet managed to completely botch it'

Explain precisely how The Feds Botched it?

They prepositioned all there assets.

The State government waited to start the evacuation and then thought they dodged a bullet because the storm swung east. Then the levees broke and they tried to play catchup and lost all there communications to the flood. So when the Feds are ready to fully roll in there is NO system in place for them to supplement (you know the way FEMA is designed to work) Please explain how the FEDS failed when it was the State government that got caught flat footed.

I love this country, I love this state, and I wish some people who claim to be Christian, would start acting that way. Children are dying, our elderly are succumbing in the heat. Your stupid pet issues, don't mean crap to me, or anybody else here. Do you get that? Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way. (Will not rant again, this has been building up since my power got back on, and I have seen isolated cases of stupidity and ignorance here).

Well, somebody had to say it. Well done. It seems many good people on this board sometimes get carried away with their frustrations over other issues and come across as pompous or even racist. I am certain most are not. We need to remember we are blessed to have many wonderful black conservatives on Freerepublic and that it is a Southern kind of place. Let us all choose our words a little more carefully so as to not appear to be what we all abhor.

There is just so much to do.

When hundreds of people showed up with boats this morning to help search & rescue they were fired on by thugs. They all packed up and went home. I don't blame them ONE BIT!

For me, it was Walkin' to New Orleans...but tonight, they ought to be singing Walkin' from New Orleans.

It's possible to do it...I hear a few people have walked out via the river levee. Long walk to BR though...

The President had to call the Mayor of NO and tell him to evacuate. Before then, all he and the governor did was twiddle their thumbs, that would be AFTER they got their own families out.

I've thought since Monday that this is going to turn out much worse than we can know, especially in the NO area. I pray for them and I pray that the hoodlums with guns will be taken care of so that the innocent can be rescued.

I'm sure I have missed this in all of the thousands of threads, but I get this impending doom that Al Quaida is just rubbing their hands in glee watching all of this chaos. Their concerns that they might have had that our Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness programs would be able to handle a large scale attack have been put aside. They see the chaos that has ensued...surely it must be tempting for them to take out additional cities with a nuke or bio attack right know so that they can throw the whole nation upside down. Regardless to say, right now would not be a good time for them to proceed with any of their dastardly plans....

No, you don't understand. Anyone with this current situation would "appreciate" a helping hand, but many of us realize that we have to be prepared to take care of our own needs for at least a week in the case of any disaster.

None of us should *expect* a handout in life, that is programmed from circumstances -- which BTW -- I don't blame the people for; I blame our society which created this situation.
