Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

A lot of lecturing going on here today. I feel that I should raise my hand to post.

I noticed you failed to raise your hand before this post.

I hear you .... but, I like the animals better.

Seriously. They're much better behaved and appreciate being rescued. More than I can say for the sub-humans prowling around the French Quarter right now.

I was just listening to her.

Did I ever tell you I got to meet her in 2000 during the debates? She was walking through the hall before the debate began and spoke with about 6-8 of us for 5 minutes.

When we walked away, I told my husband she had the most beautiful aura of anyone I'd ever met. And that's a word I never use. LOL

Splash, get wet, lather, rinse, repeat.

The water is clean before it flows into the bowl, the only germs are on the bowl surface itself.

You can drink water from the tank.

his employer(outside of NOLA) basically said "we don't care if you live in a tent, get back to work now." What company employs your dad? I want to make sure I never deal with those vampires ever again.

Here's a perspective from a different company. We have about 200 (mostly) commissioned employees affected by the storm. Their local branch offices are destroyed. We have worked our tails off getting them their weekly pay that is normally mailed to their local offices(we still pay by paper check due to the high turnover in our business). We have reached out to each one and offered to overnight mail or EFT their funds. Many of these poor souls are asking us what can they do so that they can get back to work ASAP. They have evacuated all over the country and are asking about setting up shop right where they are or coming to the home office to help deal with customers from the affected areas. Our executives are working on a pay continuation plan for some period of time. I wasn't surprised how we responded at the regional office, but I have been pleasently surprised how compassionate the corporate big wigs in New York have been.

Greta said people in Houstom Dome were taking showers in toilets, I don't believe that.

If that was my first exposure to clean water and a flushable toilet in four days, after 90+degree heat, and wading around in thousands of peoples $hit...you damn well better believe I'd be trying to do that too...its not that unreasonable.
