28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

I'd say with all the natural gas we see venting up through the water, the tons of broken glass laying in the sun, it is more likely that natural causes will start more fires than looters and thugs. Sure, they will add to the mayhem but there are plenty of natural reasons for fire.

You aren't shallow. I like them too. There have been many times that Shep makes me laugh with his irreverence regarding silly government actions. And, yes, he is a trained dramatist, but he is there trying.

Geraldo is not my favorite, but I can tolerate him. He was just explaining how the sandbag operation going on on the canal break is daunting. Even though they are dropping sand bags, the water is going over them. Those reports help counteract the talking heads saying nothing is happening.

Check my last slam at CNN - they finally picked up on the fact that it's Marine One that President Bush got out of, not Air Force One.

Lott enthousiastically greeting a Guard member.

I'm surprised that CNN isn't covering that Jack$on presser.

Indeed. I'm glad they're not.

He's now blaming global warming; going after the National Guard in Iraq instead of NOLA; pointing to the budget spent in Iraq...

He's tossing as many darts as he can...

Utter BS.

The governor was saying NO was under complete control for TWO DAYS, while hospitals and police stations were being overrun.

The local officials are STILL claiming that only 100,000 people stayed behind, while pre-storm estimates expected 600,000 and at least one report puts the figure as high as 800,000.

Any operation that goes in assuming police control of NO and 100,000 refugees will big down and fail if the umbers are mucvh higher and at this point, failure will be measured in terms of an extra 10,000 or more body count. The grace period is over. From here on out we have to execute.

Jackson blabbering about the ozone layer and global warming. Bashing the "government." Bashing the Prez's "ceremonial" flight over the area. Complaining about tax cuts. Yacking about Iraq. Doesn't seem to have anything relavent to say.

With relatives in Oklahoma. And lo and behold! Not a one of them has blamed Bush! I'm just so thankful that they used the good sense God gave them and evacuated last Saturday.

I did find out that most of the destruction in Slidell was caused by tornados. Some neighborhoods were totally leveled.

Because they're busy ginning up the poll numbers.

Actually, Arizona is a fairly safe state.

We deal with thunderstorms, but there are few other natural disasters threatening us. One reason is that we aren't all that densely populated outside of Phoenix and Tucson.

Part of the guard was called in BEFORE the hurricane even came through. Others came in the day after the storm. I know this personally as I know two LA guardsmen, one was there a day before the hurricane hit, the other was called up the day of the storm and went in the day after the storm.
