If these hoodlums burn down the French Quarter... the heart and soul of the city ... then they are putting the final nail in the coffin.

I hate to say this, but no railroad president in his right mind would risk the legal ramifications of transporting humans in freight equipment - it is Amtrak, not they, who carry most of the liability insurance. The PR would be nightmare("Then, just like the Nazis, we were crammed in a boxcar for three days..."), lawsuits would be likely since the ambulance chasers see the railroads as a sugar daddy, and that is the truth. IT IS NO LONGER POSSIBLE FOR BUSINESS TO *RISK* THE RESULTS OF COMPASSIONATE RESPONSE, even in a disaster of this magnitude.

Unless you have a standoff shaped charge, a backpack bomb, even against the liner, isn't going to do anything other than make a scorch mark. These things are HUGE - and all a shaped charge would do is gouge out some of the concrete. Most of these things in critical areas (where the Corps hasn't been hindered by morons) are a hundred feet thick or more.

A dream
I hope the president does meet with Nagin in a live public briefing. And I hope that Nagin starts whining and cursing and screaming about other people's incompentence. Heck I even hope he tries to blame Bush to his face. And I hope that at just that moment the president presents to "his honor" this disgusting photo of lines and lines of flooded busses and holds it up to the camera. Glass houses Mr. Mayor.

What angers me is that during the first three days, when the medis repeated over and over that nothing was being done, THOUSANDS of people were being rescued and thousands of people were taken to shelters, were being fed, etc. But because Bush couldn't close his eyes and click his heels and magically save everyone at the same time, he's being blasted.
To: SeaBiscuit
I wonder what the math is in your pic of flooded buses multiplied by 50 passengers each.
More than 10,000 souls at a quick glance.

I knew that Mississippi was well down there. It makes the contrast between Long Beach, where people shopped for the food after the hurricane, and New Orleans, where they looted for anything they could carry, that much more shocking.

"Train tracks are out. Many of the roads are out. Airport barely open." Early on, they were trying to get to folks via flat-bottom boats, but were encountering too much debris in the water..big debris like chunks of concrete bridges.

Chris Wallace is on Fox News right now...and he was practically giddy....saying that it won't be long before we have a "Katrina Commission" like we had the 9/11 Commission!!!
He was excited....that lib a**hole!

then they are putting the final nail in the coffin. I would have thought the "final nail" would have been the MS river levy -- and it would have. But, the Quarter going down would accomplish this too. Jesus.

If you guys really want to hit the MSM then when you send those angry emails also tell those folks you are switching off their station. That's what we're doing, I just can't put up with this crap anymore.
BTW I burnt my tongue on a Hot Pocket and it's all Bush and Rove's fault.

I'll look for that post that described the $hitstorm that descended on local govt for NO evacs for Georges and Ivan when they didn't strike. Shep was one of the major talking head idiots making fun of them on air. I remember posting something at the time about that (gotta find that too). Instead of breathing a sign of relief that the storm didn't hit and that we've just had a impromptu drill from which lessons could be learned for the next time, ridicule and scorn rain down on officials making them gun-shy the next time as well as making the population think that evacs weren't necessary. The media has a share of the blame here. They added just enough uncertainty to the minds of local and state officials that they dithered until it was too late for a storm that demanded a prompt decision. I'm not excusing the actions of the mayor and governor, just adding perspective.

Didn't Eisenhower send the National Guard into the Little Rock when the governor of Arkansas tried to prevent integration in the schools?
