Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Now is not the time, but he's on to something, and we'll need to address it once this is all over. But he's wrong about the cure.

We will need to take a good, brutally honest look at the culture of our inner cities. We should start a campaign to eliminate thug culture wherever we find it - even the white suburban wannabees.

The only disaster that compares with this is the Great Depression. And people didn't act like this then. We had TRULY poor people. But they were for the most part honerable. The people we see on TV do not even know what honor is.

I personally believe we should take welfare reform a step further. Every person in our country who is able to work should be required to work in some capacity. Work changes people, not as much as religious conversion, but it still helps give people, especially men, honor.

We don't need a new war on poverty. We need a war on poverty of spirit.

We're really one big, happy disfunctional family.

And more so this week. This has been the craziest week I've ever seen on FR --EVER.

Old-timers vs. newbies, newbies vs. old-timers, trolls flushed out by high water, old friends at each others throat. This situation is, unfortunately, bringing out the worst in some FReepers too.

*sigh*

I had lots of family and friends there. Most of the ones I am in contact in got out...but I have been glued to everything...If I hadn't left the city to care for my mom, I might have still been living there (and then I wouldn't have met my hubby, and then I wouldn't be living in Utah and talking to you!)

I still think they ought to appoint Giuliano as coordinating IC for the recovery in NO. Things would get hopping.

Any info about how the USPS is handling relief packages to Lousiana? I just heard on Fox News, that one out of five people have no shoes. This is at the Astrodome. Can boxes of clothes/flipflops/personal care items, be shipped directly there?

Maybe Payless Shoes can donate footwear?

I hate getting this mad so early, but I am furious!

For 2 hours, all I've heard and read, is pissing and moaning. Now Fox is doing a hit piece on the Astrodome. I give up. Nothing will ever be good enough, or quick enough or nice enough. President Bush, Rick Perry and anybody else that has tried to help should just go ahead and resign.

"within the next 2 weeks Chertoff will be out as will Michael Brown"

1. How's a $20.00 wager I'm just a poor pastor?

"The MSM, CBS, has a poll out today showing only 12% disapproving of the way Bush is handling the disater"

2. I'll stick with my poll prediction. The MSM has only just begun to spin this. The president's approval numbers will tank.

"Bushs visit will be successful period. He is at his best on the gournd with boots on and talking to the common folk among us."

3. Bush's visit will be successful, but what I should have said is that the MSM will find a way to present it as a failure and do so in the most humiliating way, they'll find an articulate disatisfied "victim" and make him/her the anti-Bush poster child

"emocrats are in the minority, they don't "begin impeachement hearings", they don't begin any hearings. Thats what happens when you're in the minority."

Dim's are in the minority, but by the time the MSM gets finished framing this and putting out skewed polls there will enough RHINOs ready to bolt that I'll stand by my prediction

"Bush will come out of this fine. Big losers politically will be MSM, Governor Blanco and Louisiana LEO's."

5. I agree Bush will come out fine, but he'll have a very hard year.

"Bush's numbers will always be the same."

6. His numbers will not be the same. They will tank. I'll be willing to wager on that too.

I will only watch FNC now. CNN & others are BASHing Bush all the time. Every story has a negative spin. Myles O'B earlier was interrogating a NG Air Commander as if he were an enemy of the people he's trying to evacuate.

When the Commander said they were going to use commercial planes to evac hospital patients......Myles O'B immediately interrupted with....Is that because you don't have enough military planes? The Commander responded.....'we are using commercial for those who can walk aboard' and putting those on gurneys on the military cargo planes. O'Brien looked disappointed as he'd obviously hoped to be able to report that the war in Iraq is hurting the relief effort in NOLA.

BUT I have NOT heard one REPORTER ASK......

WHERE IS THE NO MAYOR, RAY NAGIN?????

Other point for later: When mandatory evacuations are ordered, it is customary for law enforcement to ensure the order is being heeded. NOBODY at the local/state level made any effort to ensure the city was evacuated, no did they in any way help people get out who could not on their own. It's criminal negligence.

"Welcome to FreeRepublic, Uncle Ike! Guess I'll have to don my flame retardant underwear (not government issued), too, because I don't believe in a Fairy Godmother Federal Government magic wand either."

Damn straight - The MAIN LESSON of all this is that the citizen must take care of his own - food, fuel, water, and weapons.

But re: the Republican Party?? There is a perfect storm brewing and fuel prices, the middle east and pictures of bodies floating are going to converge unless something is done immediately.

Yankee Stadium clears out every night in 1 hr- why are there still people in the Super Dome - why are the Repubs setting this stage for the MSM?

Get everyone out now - including the tv crews - plug the levee, pump it out - get going.
