The Mayor said he didn't think that she had.

"Regular military is forbidden to do law enforcement, even under martial law. The Guard does it. Special orders have to be given by the president, and only under very specific conditions, which have not been met."

Last night the National Guard was begging for law enforcement assistance at the Superdome because of the 'volatile' situation there. The NG stated they needed protection.

So, in reality the NG is not performing as a police unit in this situation yet or is uncomfortable with that role.

On a side note, a news graphic this AM stated that 8 looters had already been shot.

I'm glad you liked jeffers' post. I agree that in some ways he was well off the mark, but there is so much good food for thought in that post that I've reposted it about ten times, and recieved thanks each time. It is very sobering, and we need to remember that this disaster is out of the league of any and all of us - and it is now clear to me that it will have longer lasting effects than 9/11 - something I have been concerned about and held my breath about until today, and this post.

WWL Updates as they come in on Katrina

08:06 AM CDT on Friday, September 2, 2005
Tom Planchet

8:05 A.M. WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush says relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Katrina are not acceptable.

8:03 A.M. - John Ballard, Tangipahoa Parish : Between six and eight dead in Tangipahoa.

8:02 A.M. - (AP) An explosion at a chemical depot jolted residents awake early Friday, illuminating the pre-dawn sky with red and orange flames over a city awash in corpses and under siege from looters. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Vibrations from the blast along the Mississippi River and a few miles east of the French Quarter were felt all the way downtown. A series of smaller blasts followed and then a cyclone of acrid, black smoke.

To jittery residents of New Orleans, it was yet another fearful sight in a city that has deteriorated rapidly since Katrina slammed ashore Monday morning.

Evil is always with us.

Yeah, I know, Krodg...thanks for reminding me; everytime I forget that, it slaps me in the face again.

Do good, not evil....

The goofy governor's latest excuse is that they cannot communicate.

Might be true, last night the Army Corps of Engineers at the levee break had a breakdown in comms. They requested LSP help to forward messages.

jackson does have some serious gas problems, some stations have been closed and reserved for emergency vehicles only, others have lines literally MILES long. If all he pulled was a knife, that isn't such a big deal. What % of cars in jackson do you figure have a pistol under the seat?

I just saw a wonderful segment on WWL-TV about the animal shelter being set up at the LSU Agricultural Center for displaced pets. I think this is so important, since many people stayed behind because their pets were not allowed into shelters. Plus, many people whose pets survived are more worried about their pets than themselves; getting their pets to a place where they will be well cared for is the first step toward their owners getting the care they need. Many "non-animal" people may balk at this, but I know that, if I did not have children, my pets would be my first concern during this disaster. Getting that concern off my chest would allow me to focus on what I needed to...

Anytime you hear anybody blaming Bush, or indeed, any official, it would be well to refer them to jeffers' post #106, that I've posted many times.

Bush: The results (of the efforts so far) are unnacceptable.

It was good to hear him say that. The country needs some straight talk, and many of us (myself included) need to have a fire lit under our butts.

this is certainly going to chance the broader perception of race relations in the south and the view people have of southerners. I have had a few people comment on this to me already (I am from mississippi).

And 4 years on they still don't have a plan for Ground Zero.

That's right. If the Ground Zero recovery effort is any indication of what we face in New Orleans, it will be about 5,000 years before New Orleans is rebuilt to anything even remotely resembling what it was last week.

I don't blame the policy of not allowing pets - it just sums up the wretchedness of this situation in one sense.

I'd like to see and hear a government official come clean, and encourage the people to be more self-reliant, and to develop community respources - and to advise that while federal and state help is always available, each person needs to consider the level of (in)competency (for want of a better word - they are competent, but their cure is harsh) they have.

The RIGHT ANSWER!

You can be sure that the So. Baptist will use it wisely. They have to answer to God.

ABC News (Radio) at top of the hour.....first full minute dedicated to blasting the Feds and Bush......asking why they let NOLA get so bad.....Not one critique of LA's state and local goverment....they are coming for Bush...make no mistake about it.....its gonna get ugly....

But they will fail..........as they have in their efforts to blame the President for everything else in the world.

No one with a modicum of sanity will blame him for the hurricane (Rob't Kennedy is clearly insane), and the entire country heard him BEFORE the hurricane hit land, and has seen him at work since.......and they will see him today. The press won't be able to NOT cover him (even though they would like to hide his true character), and the American people will see once again what kind of man, and leader he is.

The ideologues on the left and the far right will continue to blame him, but the vast majority of Americans will disregard their bile.
