28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Good for your employer, BTW! So much for evil capitalists, eh? :)
I just heard Blanco to the N.O. Law Enforcement, "Use necessary force" ... shoot-to-kill? looters, etc...
Is this new?
If so, I'm surprised no one posted any Breaking News headline about this.
I've been saying all along the shooters were muslim extremist. I pray I'm wrong
She's so cute. And she's SO stupid. I wish she'd just go back to being a photogenically geeky science reporter, like she was when she started out.
}:-)4
"Use of unnecessary force to apprehend the Blues Brothers HAS been authorized..." [/sarcasm]
Blanco is being interviewed on CNN. The reporter is baiting her. "Do you blame yourself for the deaths? When exactly did you request the troops? When specifically will they be here? Is it too little too late?" As bad as she is, he is being a total asshole. I would end the interview if I were her.
What we have right now is not a long-term solution.
CNN: Bush to make remarks from New Orleans...???
I hope I don't get laughed as for asking this question but what preparations should we be making (on a personal level)? I'd like to think we have a well stocked pantry but what do y'all consider "well stocked?" 2 week's worth? A month?
Me too...
Blanco has had this deer-in-headlights stare since this thing started.
I'm not suggesting there aren't those who are shooting at the rescuers, but others have done so out of desperation to be noticed. How do they differentiate?
I'm sick for the people.
sw
Blanco said to use necessary force during a presser yesterday afternoon.
I work for SBC. In addition to the million in matching funds, they are giving 4 million/month in in-kind donations of cell phones, free local and long distance services, etc. Our employees in Texas will be on the front lines working as volunteers, etc. A good bunch of people.
When I hear the FEMA guy claim that they have taken care of the people at the Convention Center, and then turn on FNC/MSNBC/CNN and see people packed in there like cattle, I have to wonder if the FEMA guy truly knows what he is talking about or whether he's got his head in his rectal orifice?
Yes, we need a long term solution. WE have the money.
sw
I don't doubt that there are hooligans shooting. But, for crap's sake, ANY kind of presence on the ground by National Guard or State Police would alone drive those people out of the woodwork. We aren't talking about brave people here. The looters are just thugs taking advantage of the total absence of authority of any kind.
On Fox, the reporter (I can't remember his name), kept egging on some people at the Astrodome, trying to get them to criticise the rescue efforts. I must say, this couple was inspiring (if not shell shocked). The man, speaking of his fellow New Orleanians, said that now we need real men to stand up, and that he was ashamed of his people. I really felt for him.
