It is a very sad thing, but most people have to have the hell scared out of them to convince them to get out. If Blanco and the Mayor had started getting people scared Friday night this would be a whole different ballgame. There are people that still would not leave, but a lot more would be alive if they have been more Alert and responsible. I heard many people say they thought they could weather this like they did the others, and they named all the ones they survived. Two more things would have helped:
- A means of keeping pets safe
- Knowledge that LOOTERS WOULD BE SHOT
Otherwise, for many people, evacuation would mean killing their pets and forfeiting everything they own, for a storm that may or may not hit, and which they would be likely to survive even if it does.

I just don't know enough about the political situation to know if some idiot would play politics with people's lives in this situation.

"Thursday, 9:46 p.m.
About 100 people have died at the Chalmette Slip after
being pulled off their rooftops, waiting to be ferried
up the river to the West Bank and bused out of the
flood ravaged area, U.S. Rep. Charles Melancon,
D-Napoleonville, said Thursday.
About 1,500 people were at the slip on Thursday
afternoon, where critical supplies like food and water
are scarce, he said. Melancon expressed serious
frustration with the slow pace of getting these items
to the people waiting to finish their journey to
safety.
Many of those at the slip were evacuated from a shelter set up at
Chalmette High School that suffered massive flooding as the waters rose
during Hurricane Katrina."

Also, saw a report that after hauling people out of the Super Dome all day, there are 10,000 more there than there were this morning. The people think it is the best place to get a ride out.

you build those sections of the city a little at a time, as fill is added. dredging the lake has the added benefit of lowering the water level. didn't Japan build an entire airport using this technique? I believe it even has a system to self-level the terminals on it.
To: Smogger
I have reached the point now that they really don't care anymore. That these people are dispensible.

Was that Monday night?
So, the hurricane was still in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama, (and Georgia, if I recall), plus NO was flooding, blocking the roads.
Well, now I really can't understand why the NG didn't rush right in bright and early Tuesday morning, can you?

Yes it is very sad.
Rather than think how to help themselves, they sit and stew because they are not being helped.
I did notice that many were slugging through that water to get to land. Many would have stayed in their homes and waited to be rescued by helicopter if things had been moving faster. But, out of desperation, they managed to get out themselves. They even devised rafts and buckets for the weak. And those people that commandeered the bus and set out to save themselves, picking up people on the way and even pooling their money to buy diapers and stuff for the children were wonderful. I admire them and their determination.
Note: I in no way am criticizing those people - just noticing the actions at the SD.

I just think of the MASH TV show (Which I think was fairly realistic, except for the politics). They had everything in tents.
Our guys in the Middle East do it in temp facilties, they can air condition and heat them.
We are going to have to spend the money one way or the other.

I just listened to the freaking 'Reverend' Al Sharpton on WDSU. He says the people out there looting the big screen tvs and guns are not the poor people. They are the people that live from paycheck to paycheck and are enraged at the infrastructure of their city collapsing because of the politicians. He said that Nero was fiddling down in Crawford while Rome burned.
So he is making excuses for the people that are raping, shooting and looting. They are disgruntled taxpayers.
There are not printable words to describe what I think about him and his statements.

But come to think of it, I saw a video where the people outside of a "Civic Center" I believe looked pretty healthy and laid back. Many sitting on their duffs. I would not at all be concerned about them. Are you high? Looked pretty healthy? THESE PEOPLE HAVE NO HOMES...NO FOOD....NO WATER....NO SHELTER FROM THE HEAT! I honestly cant believe you typed this

***Well, if all is as posted a 20 y/o and a bunch of teenagers did.***
And kudos to him... Bush should meet him and give him a medal plus a scholarship...
What I mean is that there is ABSOLUTELY no sense of COMMUNITY, no one in New Orleans is even ATTEMPTING to lead..
Sure, there are a few anecdotal cases, but where are the ministers? Where are the "Community Leaders" that are all too anxious to jump in front of a TV camera when times are good?

How many closed military bases are around? I know that Fort Ord in Monterrey still has barracks and things. It seems like we could put refugees in those bases, even if it is a long way from NO.

Mon or Tue, some are saying Mon. For me, it's all beginning to run together.
The lefties are counting on the naivity and ignorance of the American public to buy this crap about it being Bush's fault. As usual, it'll be up to the bloggers and FR to set the record straight.
Good catch, btw.

I just rec'd an email from the UWashington president. Even as far away as Seattle, we will be opening our doors to displaced Tulane students. Generously, the UW will let the tuition continue to go to Tulane, so it can rebuild.

I had wondered if a bunch of thugs had stayed behind as part of a get rich quick scheme. I suspect that most who stayed behind didn't have money or transportation. That is why I wonder why the city and state didn't have a transporation plan in place for evacuation. That is clearly not a federal matter. Buses from schools and other sources could have been used to pick up people all over the city if they needed transportation out. National guard vehicles could have done that also.

I'm headed to bed, but before I do, let me update the streams
We welcome WWL-AM, WNOE, "KISS-FM," WRNO, WYLD, WQUE, WLMG, WSMB, KHEV and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.
The New Orleans Police Department transmissions have resumed. I have located another relay. Now the system is also including radio messages from the National Guard operating in southern Louisiana. Be aware these streams are subject to interruption (file not found errors). Just be patient and try another link or try again later.
We welcome the Gulf Coast ARES Emergency Network. These are amateur radio operators providing assistance and coordination via high frequency (shortwave) links. The audio feed for this will be subject to interference and sound anomalies due to the transmission mode and frequency.
We welcome back WGNO-TV which has returned to the air and launched streaming. They are partnering with WBRZ-TV. Glad to see New Orleans' ABC station back up and running with continuous Katrina coverage.
CBS occasionally has to discontinue their WWL feed for other live events. If the CBS feed goes offline, use the second WWL link.
All information is subject to change. Many stations are relying on their corporate parents to configure and maintain Internet streaming. Because of the intense interest in the feeds, they may be unavailable at times because of network congestion or a problem feeding the video to the streaming servers.
WWL-TV New Orleans - WWL-TV is operating from studios at Louisiana Public Broadcasting. CBS has a relay during the morning and afternoon. When available, use the CBS relay first as they have greater streaming capacity.
WDSU-TV New Orleans - The news staff has started to return to temporary news studios near New Orleans. However, expect evening coverage from Hearst-Argyle sister stations WAPT Jackson and WESH Orlando when the New Orleans staff needs to take a break.
WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.
WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.
WKRG-TV Mobile, AL - This station is providing good coverage of the situation to the east in Mississippi and Alabama. However, the station is now signing off at around 10:30pm CDT like WWL and WPMI.
WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).
United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.
Gulf Coast Storm Network (Clear Channel Radio) - Clear Channel offers radio listeners across the gulf coast access to a simulcast emergency radio service. This service seems primarily focused on Alabama and Mississippi, but does cover Louisiana to some degree.
New Orleans Police Department & National Guard Operations: Several volunteers are pitching in to help relay these "scanner broadcasts." You can now listen for extended periods of time. The service now also includes broadcasts from the National Guard operating in southern Louisiana.
Gulf Coast ARES Emergency Network: These are amateur radio operators providing assistance and coordination via high frequency (shortwave) links. The audio feed for this will be subject to interference and sound anomalies due to the transmission mode and frequency.
