28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

"LOL, you nailed it! Honestly, that is one of the funniest posts in this mess."

Sadly, I do not believe it is far from the truth. (I think that is why it comes off as so funny.)

Arnold S., the Gov. of California is sending 500 National Guardsmen and equipment!

We'll only hear from the so called celebrities when they can get their face on TV.

"Just now on MSNBC, casualty count according to hospital and rescue workers is 'expected' to go over a thousand in Biloxi area, altho current 'actual' count is 120+."

That's terrible.

One of the things that I've learned after 'being in the middle' of three hurricanes and two TS's in the last year is that the ones affected know the least about what's going on...you become isolated. I just got phone service back today, still no electricity and other than trees and limbs down every where, we came through pretty good.

It would be at Reunion arena in downtown Dallas.

I've heard an unconfirmed (by me) rumor that SMU is taking in some Tulane students. I heard on the radio that Metroplex hospitals are going to make available 1000 beds for those who need hospitalization.

The article said it all. THX

Bottom line is the cost to rebuild NO has to be far more than what they are estimating.

I say screw the hellhole. Rebuild elsewhere.

No prob. Around here there are constantly charity events. Churches collecting food, piles of winter coats at the supermarket, blood drives, bone-marrow drives, cancer fundraisers, and just tons of things. But, I remember that particular statistic you mentioned and it was basically because the giving goes unreported...maybe something about our tax system? I forget...:-)

You forgot the reverand...

That is reverrrrr...rand.

I crack up everytime I hear Rush pronounce Jackson's name. Reverrrr.rand Jaaackson Great job on the threads Nautinurse. I like the new events of the day listed at the top as they occur. What about adding the date/time just so we will know it was today and not a prior day. Of course you might have been doing that all along - I am not the most observant person around.

My stepson was in Iraq and Jordan in the early months of the war. We asked him to bring us back some MRE's and we tasted several. They were NOT bad and if I was in New Orleans and hungry, I'd be happy to have one.

(AFP) Troops deployed in New Orleans with shoot-to-kill orders

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana : Iraq-tested US troops with shoot-to-kill orders were deployed in New Orleans on Thursday to restore law and order after days of chaos and looting in the hurricane-devastated city.

Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco said the 300 troopers from the Arkansas National Guard had been authorised to open fire on "hoodlums" who have been terrorising the flooded city in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The people who are shooting at aid workers and medical teams better stop their nonsense.
