28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

The guard is being deployed in force tonight - let's see what happens, they are going to have to start taking some of these thugs out en masse.

Guard thinking to self: Wish I were on my way to Iraq about now...

Throwing their kids into the water? Actually that sounds about right. Did the man say who was piloting the boats?

He didn't know, but they weren't police rescue boats.

Anyway, he insists he saw the kids drown. He's getting dialysis now. We're reaching the outer limits for survival of those who haven't left NO and need that treatment. Katrina is long gone, but the death toll is likely to grow fast in the next couple of days. And I'm referring to people who are currently alive, not already dead.

You cannot just take over the State, this is not some third world country. The Fema people cannot just bust into the state and take over like Hitler. We are 50 States not a Monarchy.

Scanner repeating an air evac request for six medical personnel and four military guys stuck at Esplinade & Moss (Cabrini high school) that the CG was supposed to pick up - the guys went in to deliver water and give on-scene aid of some kind but no one came back for 'em.

"To: jeffers

It was reported early that they were told to bring food and water for a couple of days, it was a "shelter of last resort", meaning nothing was going to be there."

They were told to come prepared for five days but that is unrealistic. My baseweight (pack, bag and shelter) runs 14 pounds, food runs two pounds a day (rehydrated weight) and you figure on a gallon a day of water each ( I carry a filter and chlorine). Just the water runs 35 pounds plus base, 50 pounds per person, and food on top of that.

You are behind on the news. Texas is bringing people in from LA as fast as we can get them here... even to the rate that people are worried that the Astrodome is going to become a repeat of the Superdome minus the flood.

Here in Seattle about 2-3 times a year all the hospitals and LE participate in a citywide disaster drill. We do the whole kit and kaboodle on pretending. and we endlessly rehearse.

I live down the street from Northwest Hospital and can see them going thru the drills. From the outside, and w/o an actual disaster, it looks like they are prepared.

But here's the question - I'm sure hospitals, police, fire, etc in NO have these drills as well. What happened, or didn'thappen, for there to be such a lack of response? Is the extent of the disaster just too great? Are we fooling ourselves w/what we could do in a real disaster? Are the folks in NO just not competent?

I'm not going to blame first responders in NO, I ask out of concern in case a terrorist situation happens. It looks like folks are on their own.

Russia had people in NO and offered to send several cargo planes, search and rescue personnel, and more - but we refused them.

The youngest rape victim (reported) was four years old.

I don't know who I'm more incensed at, the rapist or Landrieu and Blanco.

I would be banned for life if I posted what I am thinking upon hearing this...

"It would just be nice to hear offers of help from other states that are not far from LA. Perhaps they could just send buses to bus the people to Texas. Something."

Well the States directly east of them have their own problems at the moment. Texas is the proverbial Calvary riding to the rescue maybe Oklahoma, Arkansas and Tennesee have something in the works but I have not heard.

No, it will be the "hey, we can move one of the kids in our room so that the family can move in with us" kind of crowd that will be the heroes of this situation.

Kerry and Kennedy...well, let's just say I'd be banned for life.

I think in the NO situation, the people who had no means to get out were encouraged to go to local shelters; public transportation bused them in (to the SD for instance).
