the United States initially seemed reticent about accepting foreign aid, but later said it would take up any offers. Reticent? Why reticent?

Note who's not on that list: oh say, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, two of the richest nations for whom we do so much. Go figure. Or how about Egypt the yearly recipient of $3 BILLION of our dollars.

Italy Offers Aid For US Areas Hit By Hurricane Katrina
ROME (AP)--Italy has offered to send aid to the U.S. and has readied two military transport planes to carry supplies and personnel to New Orleans or other areas hit by Hurricane Katrina, Italy's Civil Protection said Thursday.
Italy's aid effort would include pumps, generators, amphibious crafts, tents, as well as experts in managing and assisting evacuees, the Civil Protection said in a statement.

BERLUSCONI TO BUSH, I FEEL VERY CLOSE TO US PEOPLE

Cuban President Fidel Castro, a close Chavez ally, led a minute of silence in remembrance of the victims of Katrina in parliament on today. The parliament then returned to normal business with a resolution attacking Mr Bush over the Iraq war. Castro is a pig who should be fed to the sharks. Nevertheless, he evacuated his people from the low-lying areas during this hurricane season.
It's pathetic that the city of New Orleans did not make available free buses for the residents and tourists to leave before the storm.
Even worse, the city did not have a rational evacuation plan.

It is good to allow other peoples of the world to offer assistance. They want to help. The people stuck in this mess have no idea how much help is on the way. They'll soon find out how we can help them make an even bigger mess (for a little while). Sloppy charity, but charity nonetheless.

Sri Lanka's president's statement really blessed me; it was so unlike the huffing and puffing of the "giants" of Europe:
Even the tsunami devastated country of Sri Lanka has responded with a pledge of $25,000 to the American Red Cross. "Having experienced the fury of nature ourselves during the December 26 tsunami, the people of Sri Lanka and I fully empathize with you at this hour of national grief," said President Chandrika Kumaratunga.
