China is preparing for nuclear war with the United States over Taiwan, and a conflict is likely in the near future because of divisions among Beijing's leaders, a Chinese democracy activist says.
Wei Jingsheng, a leading international advocate for political reform in China, said in an interview with The Washington Times that President Bush and other U.S. leaders do not fully understand the chance of a conflict breaking out and must do more to avert it.

I agree about their understanding our government better than we do theirs. But I disagree about the people. Even our own government reads the people of America wrong.
"And the simplest asymmetric attack of all: Ten or more major EMP blasts from SCUDS launched from anonymous Arab-registry ships above the continental U.S., and have Al-Quaeda take credit for it. Every U.S. city would be in almost the same straits immediately as New Orleans.
"No phones. No electrical power. No communications. No gasoline able to be pumped. No computers. No banks. Not pretty."
There is one small problem: this "simple" attack would require operational capabilities far beyond al-Qaeda's. Indeed, only the US, Russia, China, Britain, and France could pull it off. 3 out of 5 are not guilty; a very plausible US response would be to incinerate the national governments of the remaining two.
I think you're wrong.
I'm much more willing to bet my professional participant observer understandings gleaned from years in China to whatever experiences you've had.
And, pride is not always rational in it's origins or manifestations.
To a large degree, the Chinese leadership is told only what it wants to hear much worse than even our military.
I don't know why. I don't know if it's the puppet masters nest that I think is there or what but I think Atlanta is definitely on a horridly harsh discipline short list.
I don't want to take the time to get into all that. They had a pretty good nuke program. We had double agents in it. We shut it down.
Now the Chinese can have puzzle boxes within puzzle boxes but all their experts were known to us and closely monitored.
I don't have any need to argue the details. It sounds like I know a lot more about it than you do.
I'd agree that I think that key elements of China's leadership doesn't understand our people well.
They are viscerally averse to any kind of internal civil war sorts of conflicts.
They would much more easily support a foreign war even at great devastation to their own land.
The leadership has a very probably even over blown set of assumptions about the success of tyranny and CONTROL. Tienanmen only intensified those assumptions.
Did you read the Tienanmen Papers?
Very insightful. Raw government documents by the ton were distilled.
You're right I know,,,and it made me think of a play/movie from the sixties titled,,""" THE Persecution and Assination of Jean-Paul Marat, AS Performed by the Inmates of the ASSylum at Cherdon UNDER the Direction of the Marquis de Sade """ But you know, EVEN the frogs rejected old Sade and threw him in the cracker box....
Just my best guess.
But not out of thin air. I didn't think so much of my understandings of China. I think so-called "China Experts" who pontificate as self apointed such on national TV are deluding themselves from George Bush 1 as well as a list of others.
But I had lots of grass roots experience as well as endless hours of discussions with very well connected people who had connections into the Central Committee.
I have learned over the years, that my understandings of China repeatedly gained spontaneous comments of "You think like a Chinese" repeatedly from Taiwanese as well as Mainlanders.
I Love them dearly. I don't trust Beijing at all. I trust them to be greedy and acquisitive and arrogant and blind in spots and very perceptive in other spots.
If they try it, their export to the USA Economy would collapse... Joe and Jane America AND the Govt. would reduce China product purchases enough to idle Chinese factories and instigate riots of a Dynasty wide scale....Win or lose the Island in question, their EXPORTS would slowwww down, and the rice bowl would EMPTY and the winning MING-BOTS would then be fighting their continuing INTERNAL enemy...
I don't think there's any way to express my heart regarding my Godsons and Daughters on Taiwan or Manland China. . . .or for the country of Taiwan or the people of Mainland China.
Yes, they have some very disconcerting aspects to their characters and priorities.
So do we.
Certainly a possibility.
Not the only one.
And, I'm sure they are confident--rationally or irrationally--that they could overcome such problems well enough. They've been THERE before.
Ever wonder what the world would be like if FDR would have let Patton drive on through Russia, and across China?
Well I like them also, and know a few American/Chinese...But I've also heard it said that they are the TRUE paper tigers, and the hot banter emerges because they debate with each other in a sealed environment...When they play it out beyond their coccoon they should realize that Grinning over a destroyed ruined country isn't much of a success....And you know, we would respond massivly because WE aren't going down to slavery as an option....What's the point....
Yes, and BEFORE is history and TODAY is different so the BUTCHERS of BEJING will have to contend with a Chinese population that surely is more capable of sustaining a REVOLT if the attack mongers force them into a scrounging lifestyle from a ruined economy.....Maybe they think they can split their forces for INTERNAL operations AND destroying the ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
"Funny... The Chinese keep finding "Made in USA" on their missle guidance systems, computing and networking equipment."
Good one.
Thanks for the ping!
