Exactly. Did you hear this idiotic mayor of NO calling for "Desperate SOS". How can people like this man be elected to lead? Leaders must project confidence in time of crisis and not running around screaming and wringing their hands. The elected officials of the State of Louisiana and New Orleans are pathetic losers. This is just unbelievable. Thank God we have President Bush who always shows great leadership in time of national crisis and tragedies as this one.
I have no idea what other reporters may or may not be there because I only watch FNC, but all this carping about Shep is really annoying. I think he's shown great heart by getting personally involved with the refugees instead of standing around sipping cold water while reporting "objectively". You'd have to be made of stone to witness what he has and not react. I also believe that his outrage is what got the powers that be moving.

actually, I've found Shep better on the Katrina coverage, he seems deadly serious compared to his usual glib self.
We cannot on the one hand object to the media NOT showing the clips of planes going into the WTC and people jumping from those building, which would emphasize WHY we are involved in Iraq and the WOT, generally .. and on the other hand object to showing an actual dead victim of the NO devastation.
The media has gone out of its way not to show all the bodies floating in the canals and river. I don't WANT to see it, but it would certainly bring the reality home in a whole other way.

Original specifications were to withstand a Cat 3 storm. That's what the ACOE built. Katrina was a strong Cat 4.
Yes, I've previously heard that but I suspect questions will be asked re why that decision was made. Not that anyone was necessarily 'wrong' but nevertheless it is an interesting question in view of the current situation.
Yes, this event has made the young man grow in a very meaningful way. He is a different and better guy now, imo.

Ease up on Shep. I think he's doing a very good job under horrific conditions. You can tell he actually feels for these poor people who don't have a clue whats up. He is doing his job....REPORTING.
Hey, I’m no fan of Shep’s either, but if US citizens are dying from lack of aid, we need to know about it. Action is what is needed at this point, not more planning and staging. I've lived on the Florida Gulf coast all of my life and have experienced every hurricane since 1960. The worst was Ivan, last year. The Pensacola area was devastated by Ivan. I mean devastated. For days, we were cut off from the outside world except for one four lane highway that led to I-65 in Alabama. Even so, within 24 hours, help began arriving in the way of National Guard, Red Cross, FEMA, private and religious groups. Granted, Ivan's swath of damage was limited compared to Katrina's but help did begin arriving soon after the storm passed. Distribution centers began popping up all over the affected area. Water, ice, MRE's and soup kitchens were available within 24 to 48 hours.
Everyone that I have discussed this situation with here is wondering what is taking so long for these same relief efforts to reach these poor folks. After we went into Afghanistan, I recall watching news footage of the Air Force dropping MRE's from cargo planes into the war torn areas to relieve the poor suffering souls there. I just can't believe that the same can't be done in the worst areas affected by Katrina. In northwest Florida alone, we have Eglin AFB, Hurlbert AFB, Pensacola NAS and Whiting Field NAS that could be used as staging areas for aerial relief efforts. Granted this doesn't provide transportation for the stranded folks but at least food and water could be delivered. I realize that I'll probably get flamed about snipers taking pot shots at the helicopters that are trying to help these folks, but Eglin has Spec OPs personnel that are trained to operate at night, in blackout conditions that could fly supplies in and have the means to defend themselves if fired upon. Flame away.
Our President was working all the time during his vacation in a ranch he owns in Texas, and he was not sitting with some left wing rich liberals bathing in the sun and checking over women breasts on the beaches of Marta's Vineyard and Hayennis as your pal Clinton did.
I have always been a Condi fan. But face it, the leadership has not exactly been engaged and proactive in the face of this disaster. When it became obvious that the hurricane would hit NO, exigency plans should have been in place to cover a wide range of possible outcomes. Fears that the levies (sp?) might not hold up were out there long before they actually gave way. When something like this breaks, the leadership should be working around the clock. I also think Bush would have done well to return from the Ranch when the extent of the disaster first became apparent. Sorry if you feel that it's a rant, but I believe those in high places have better things to do at a time like this than attend a frivolous comedy performance.

Bodies floating in the muck is an image that won't fade anytime soon. That's something I believe we have all associated with third world countries, not our own. Very, very sobering situation in all regards. The effects are going to be very long term from this one.
Speaking for myself, I have also realized that seeing the photos of so many black families who have been hard hit is very sobering. I had to be honest with myself and face the truth that my world has only included 'Cosby-esque' blacks. Sobering on all fronts.
All this being said, the hurricane was hugely more destructive than expected and nobody has a magic want...

Amen!! I was on the Capitol Beltway today and tried to envision all the "refugees" who might be there if something catastrophic of this magnitude happened in or around DC.
That is the problem with New Orleans in a nutshell. It's the story of the ant and the grasshopper, in a more brutal form.
