I seem to remember during the 9/11 attacks on NY the fire and police had major communication promblems. This is a disaster over a much wider are and a much larger scale. Competent leadership would have realized long ago that satalite communications would be necessary in a major disaster. NO seems totally unprepared and inept to handle this situation. My hopes are that the US military are able to come in and take charge of this situation.

All the miltary units are HF, FM, and SATCOM. They have *no* problems talking to each other and coordinating.
Unfortunately, NO didn't see fit to invest in portable radios, apparently.
