President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Tropical Storm 12
Good to hear from you. Get ready quick, could be another yet this season.
Ending entitlements is the only way to restore self-respect.
Did anyone see the video of the Convention Center on WDSU. What a nightmare. Unfrigginbelievable.
Please watch the language!
When I last saw Shep, he and that corpse were the only people in sight.
I hear you - although I've never been so thrilled to receive a FedEx package as the one shipped yesterday from Jackson MS, received this morning. Even the FedEx delivery guy was impressed it got out of there and delivered.
Thanks for the confirmation.
You post added a bit of optimism to a grim afternoon. Take care and keep well!
Ok, that's it. That's coercion to violate the First Amendment. She can't even suggest control of the press. She's off her rocker.
Somebody has got to get the Martial Law action moving. This is insanity. Everybody I talk to is already on pins and needles over the disaster, reporting riots will only solidify reality. D*mmit, we've got to stop the thugs!!!
>>No he didn't!<<
Yes indeedy --he most certainly did. I then turned off the TV, because my husband gets mad if I throw the remote through it.
How can there still be 200,000-300,000 people in NO? I heard they evacuated 80% of the people BEFORE the storm. That would mean only about 100,000 didn't evacuate.
Is it just me?
This is the 2nd time i've seen the Convention Center footage, and I understand that this is a disaster, but does it seem that the group used to handouts, is demanding to know where their handouts are?
This morning a local radio host was saying the same thing.
Then they mentioned the idea of blowing all the levees, letting NO's go to sea level, and making a Venice in America.
They were just kidding about the Venice part, but I agree about rebuilding. How do you know it all won't happen again?
And why don't we hear the liberal eco groups complaining about the supposed plan to pump out NO...are they going to pump all that polluted water back into the Lake and ultimately into the Gulf?
I emailed Blitzer with a blistering note about Caferty and Aaron Brown while I was at it!
1345th Transportation Company, Okla Guard is enroute to the dome...
ROFLOL....
No, I've been having to work. (Shakes head in disgust)
I'm afraid that the equal amounts of water on both sides may be the only thing holding parts of the levee up. Once the water drains on one side, well...
But where are they supposed to go? I mean they thought it was a pickup point. Where are they supposed to wander to now? I mean they are they're waiting pretty patiently. They are not looting or what not. Jesus, someone drop some water.
WDSU reporter says looks like no one in charge.
please do - appreciate it
