President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

DO YOU HAVE UP to DATE 'emergency kits' ??

Yep...My household for at least 7 days: food, clothing, water, tents and cots, bucket with free standing toilet seat and dry bleach/kitty litter plastic bags for a toilet.

Pets are covered with a 'go crate' that has/meds/leashes/tie out stakes . There's also a fairly complex medical first aid kit. All located on the outside of a garage wall so that if needed breaking through the outside wall of the house should be doable.

"What more can you be looking for? It is clear that the President has taken charge here, and has us working on getting the job started."

The problem, and a serious one it is, is that while what you say is true, it is not at all clear.

I do agree that it was dicey for him to chase a 902 mb hurricane.

Anybody see Robert Eckles (TX coordinator for LA relief effort)? Here is a direct quote off my TIVO:

"We have contingency plans in place for this kind of storm here, we drilled this for years, we know that but for the grace of god this could be coming up for Galveston. We had Carl in the 60s, and .. BO breaks in .. "

I saw a list on the prior thread of the things that TX is doing for the State of LA, and wow. At the end of the interview he continues on to describe (as the O cuts him off) parts of the plan including security screening, etc.. Wow they have it together down in the Republic.

But the Bush administration cut New Orleans flood control funding by 44 percent to pay for the Iraq war.

I would wager that the above is NOT the whole story. More like--unnecessary funding was cut & the politicos in LA chose not to put any money toward flood control.

Anyway, that's what I hope happened.

I saw the same footage from Biloxi of a pharmacist and two helpers trying to load a heavy safe that is required for storing narcotics in drug stores. Someone had already tried to break into it, but were unsuccessful. Yes, the cameraman could have helped. But Shep and Jeff have done a good job of trying to get someone on the ball to help the refugees...and Jeff stopped a man from drinking contaminated water and gave him some bottled water. They are doing more than the Red Cross at this point.

I have been tired of the censoring from day one. Only local channels were showing the troops helping people into trucks to get them out of there. I got fed up with cable news and turned them off.

"the pain and suffering is going to be enormous and affect folks for at least two generations"

Nah, about 30-40 years. When I was a child I remember teachers and relatives telling me about Camille and Betsy and the associated horrors. I guess granny's stories of Betsy don't count.

Don't underestimate human capcity to live in denial..."It can't happen to me", "That was back then, houses are stronger now" , "The media is all hype"

I remember when East New Orleans contained nothing abandoned shacks from previous storms and marsh. Developers came in, filled in the land and built on top. Within a decade all the flooded neighborhoods will be rebuilt with a new generation of homeowners, younger ones, who'll say, "Yeah, but during Katrina the pumps and levees weren't nearly as good as they area now."

The bodies of the dead in Thailand, etc, moved the world to donate millions and millions. Yet, we won't show the dead from this incident.

My point exactly.

rolling_stone, how did I miss that you had family still in the middle of this? I am so glad that the family members in Mandeville are fine!! Will pray for those in Slidell . . . alot! Does your family need anything?

I didn't hear about the hostage situation . . . ugh! This just gets worse and worse, doesn't it?

Are you watching BOR? There is someone calling in—she is trapped in her house and BOR is going to help her! Wow!

"Why didn't we hear that from Shep?"

I think you are confusing two different situations.

Shep was interviewing folks that were trying to get TO the Superdome, they were coming from the projects. The other guy was interviweing people who had left the Superdome.

I think those Plaquemines Parish shots are the most dramatic photos of all. The eye went right over that area, and it wasn't much below CAT 5 at the time. Hard to imagine anyone riding that out.

If we learn only one thing from this tragedy, it is to update our emergency kits. Do not rely on the government to help you or your family. I am not knocking the emergency workers but if you have to rely on them, you can wind up like these refugees.
