President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

How many of you have seen "C.O.P.S" on TV for the last 10 years (I have wanted to ask them to change the program name from "C.O.P.S" to "Glorifying The Decay of America as Entertainment"). An unruly, huge segment of this in the society can and will revert to mob rule and anarchy when and if they get the chance, because by and large, those pockets were lower levels of de-facto anarchy to begin with, with a modicum of police control. This is what can and will happen in the event of a pandemic or suitcase nuke in one of our large cities with a similarly disposed citizenry of these types. I can think of LA, Detroit, Chicago, Houston, Baltimore, Miami, New York City and our own belove capital where this could also happen. The country needs to wake up to the enemy and enemies within.

7:37 A.M. - (AP) The evacuation of the Superdome was suspended Thursday after shots were fired at a military helicopter, an ambulance official overseeing the operation said. No immediate injuries were
reported.
"We have suspended operations until they gain control of the Superdome," said Richard Zeuschlag, head of Acadian Ambulance, which was handling the evacuation of sick and injured people from the
Superdome.
He said that military would not fly out of the Superdome either because of the gunfire and that the National Guard told him that it was sending 100 military police officers to gain control.
"That's not enough," Zeuschlag. "We need a thousand."
If this isn't crunch time, the Battle for New Orleans, or the cassus belli for same, only two alternatives.
1. The political bosses play pattycake, hoping to keep the lid on, but the simmer turns to boil,
2. Those left in New Orleans are....left in New Orleans.
The more emotional, hand-wringing and angry the reaction to this crisis the more obstacles there are to dealing with it. There was a reason for calm (and seemingly slow at the time) response by the Bush administration to 911. A further panic would have created huge problems for all of us and handed a great victory to the enemy.
The local government in Louisiana has not responded as well as the mayor and governor in New York did in 9/11 – nor as well as they did in the various hurricanes in Florida last year, nor as well as they are now responding in Mississippi.
The Federal government cannot and should not overreach the local authorities. They have the first responsibility. It’s a jurisdictional thing that can (and in this case has) cost lives and property. But as soon as the locals threw up their hands and asked for help, it was on the way – both at the Federal level and by other, surrounding states (like Texas). In fact, the Federal help (FEMA) was pre-positioned ahead of the storm.
What would the reaction have been if all these – Federal and other States – had jumped the gun and forced themselves on Louisiana? IMHO, they would have cried out that they would have done a much better job if the feds and other governors had kept their mitts out of it.
I imagine the ACLU is already hard at work, planning to file lawsuits based on Posse Comitatus for the initiatives taken in the crisis. IMHO, it would be a good thing anyway and might encourage legislation to give a greater right to the federal government to take logistical control in natural disasters when the local authorities are not up to it – e.g. emotional, hand-wringing, angry, confused, etc.
Precisely why the media should have been out of there two days ago.

10:01 A.M. - (AP) -- The military plans to increase the number of National Guard troops on duty in Louisiana and Mississippi from a combined 7,400 to about 18,100, the senior commander in charge of military relief and rescue efforts said Thursday.
9:45 A.M. - Dave Matthews Band is expected to announce a concert today benefitting the hurricane victims.
9:36 A.M. - NEW YORK (AP): Harry Connick Jr., who grew up in New Orleans, says the city will rebuild and that its residents are "freakishly strong."
In an interview today on NBC's "Today" show, Connick compared the rejuvenating spirit of New Yorkers after the September 11 terror attacks to those in the hurricane-ravaged city.
Connick was born and raised in New Orleans, developing his music in jazz bands and at clubs in the French Quarter. His father, Harry Connick Senior, served as district attorney of Orleans Parish for 29 years before retiring in 2003.
He will join a televised fund-raiser, "A Concert for Hurricane Relief," tomorrow on NBC, MSNBC and CNBC at 7 p.m. that also will include performances by Wynton Marsalis and Tim McGraw.
In a posting on his Web site, Connick said he knew his immediate family was safe, but hadn't yet heard from other family and friends.
