I bet there are a lot of people who are sorry they didn't vote for him now. I'm proud to say that I voted for him and not that miserable excuse for a governor, Blanco.

Add that to the Fox TV report last night, a NY reporter on the scene, who escaped his hotel after the police said they were abandoning it due to the water and chaos outside, and only by him borrowing a police flashing blue light they could put on the car dash.

Even with that, while traversing the single road to safety, they came across a RYDER TRUCK, back door fully up, being filled with looted goods, and one of the N.O. ("oppressed") looters brandished an AK-47 at him, noticed the flashing light, and said (according to the New York Post reporter) quote "F*ck the Police!"

He felt as if they had passed through an extremely dangerous situation.

Off current thread purpose as to providing news for all on impact and recover,

but this just in from WWL:

" But not all responses were positive. Islamic extremists are rejoicing. Internet chatter referred to the storm as "Private" Katrina, and said it had joined the global holy war against the U.S."

As feared. The gov't of NO, and the gov't of LA have a lot to answer for. There's no reason that should ever have happened, even if the levees did break.

Ahhh, but they and the media minions have already geared up an effort to blame the Feds (i.e. Bush) for their problems -- from levees to poor preparation for this particular storm.

That's two I've heard about so far (CNN and NBC). O'Brien is in Baton Rouge and Perky Katie is NY, safe and away from the increasingly appropriately named "front lines".

But so many people scattered. My sil hasn't heard from her Mom yet, but they went to MS instead of Houston.

Update from Michael Chertoff soon, also an update from FEMA. Per FNC.

A 2-year-old girl slept in a pool of urine. Crack vials littered a restroom. Blood stained the walls next to vending machines smashed by teenagers. The Louisiana Superdome, once a mighty testament to architecture and ingenuity, became the biggest storm shelter in New Orleans the day before Katrina's arrival Monday. About 16,000 people eventually settled in. By Wednesday, it had degenerated into horror. A few hundred people were evacuated from the arena Wednesday, and buses will take away the vast majority of refugees today. "We pee on the floor. We are like animals," said Taffany Smith, 25,...

Thread on FR now that many jazz luminaries haven't been heard from.

I've seen estimates that after the hurricane there were as many as 500,000 in the NOLA urban area that need to be evacuated. Could be a long, long time before many of them are able to report in or be tracked down.

I think there are a lot of folks in Mobile who would take issue with your statement.

And having been to many in Mobile, I find it hard to believe that St. Louis has something of greater size.

Wasn't necessarily the Feds job to prepare for the disaster...New Orleans first, then Louisiana have a lot involved there as well...and NO been missmanaged since the Americans took over from the French and Spanish.

Chertoff should impose a media blackout of NO and throw these agitators, led by CNN, the Hell out of there.

Yep and what is interesting, and I haven't heard it said, is the next to last paragraph of your post. As the center of the bell goes thru each phase and so on.

But what is interesting, is that those phases are fluid."

Exactly fluid, you can literally see the "slosh" effect. It's so clear that a hydraulics guy could quantify the whole process.

On a side note, if you expect the worst, there are never any surprises, and the dynamics are dampened greatly.

3-4 thousand were killed at Antietam, with another 2000 or so missing.

The number you're giving is total casualties, which includes wounded.

For those that slam the immigrant auto plants - WWL is reporting Nissan is donating trucks to assist in the relief efforts.

Gack!

This is not a week for politics and usual, but Blanco is toast and cannot possibly consider running for re-election. I believe that LA is an off-year gubernatorial cycle, so I believe her term ends in 2007?

"On WWL they were talking to a police officer and he said their biggest problem is there is no central command post and no communication between officers. Mayor Nagin and Governor Blanco are the
reason that all this looting is continuing. They are both inept and the blame for this mess is at their feet.
"

This corroborates scanner reports from the overnight. Based on 1.5 sources, (I prefer 3) it begins to look like "every man for himself".

Ya know, I've heard him (Jeff Goldblatt) tell that story 4 times this morning, and it's changed every time -- started out as 2 men with AK47's, and the last telling was 1 man with "some kind of assault weapon"...

Wonder if we'll ever find out what actually happened, there,on his trip out of the city -- but it's got the beginnings of a pretty neat urban legend.

Smart move.

Bypasses politics, and concentrates on the dire need.
