President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Tropical Storm 12
Quite right!
Lord have mercy.
Prayers to the troops, police, and rescue personnel trying to aid there under these circumstances.
I thought the first news I saw this AM said a SWAT team had been dispatched to the Dome. (to keep order)
(maybe I was dreaming ??)
I'll try to keep posting . . . I'm on 2 hours sleep and have work-related obligations today . . .
very good idea.
Just turned on CNN to watch Miles O'Brien arguing with Haley Barbour about how poorly the feds are handling this - Miles is making an arse of himself - is this the tone of the news this morning?
Sweet Jesus....!
Haley Barbour - Gov. of Mississippi
please do not forget the abandoned hospital workers.
"Guy on CNN fighting with Gov. of Alabama - ridiculous - trying to get him to say the Feds didn't do enough - he refuses to agree"
Haley Barbour just, in essence, told Miles Obrien to take his nit-picking and f**k himself...
Way to go, Haley!!!!!!
I saw that....the Gov. was getting mad at the reporter...who wouldn't let the Gov. answer without "arguing" with what the Gov. was saying....said "it's not right to stand there and "pick the bones" of what the govt. should do/have done....they're very grateful....this is the worst national disaster in America's history" .....
I just heard Miles O'Brien on CNN practically tear Gov Barbour's head off for the lack of preparation...he was literally baiting the governor to say the feds blew it. Barbour was furious..but ended the conversation by saying we will rebuild...but it won't be done by nit-picking..
Excellent idea. At a later date, I'd love to see a FR thread that detailas what could/should be in an emergency kit.
No, did not mean to. I cannot imagine the stress. One source had said some were keeping patients on ventilators/respirators manually.
Finally, Jim Rob, thanks to you and the technical staff for keeping the servers up and humming.
A definite second on that!
I know you mentioned staff, but I'd like to reiterate the thanks to the moderators for doing an excellent job (as well as their patience)!
(past) TIME to send in our MARINES !!
